| Imagine Your Business Competing with the Governmen
Imagine you wake up tomorrow and your business (insert name of business) is in direct competition with the city government. Your company has to make a profit in order to get investors to send more money. The city is non-profit. Only trying not loose money. The city comes in and undercuts the for profit business and soon your company must cut prices and reduce profits. Or, they cut costs to maintain profits and begin laying off workers. Or, they simply shrivel up and die. No company is going to stand by idly. They will do what it takes to survive and that includes trying to turn public opinion.
I am only trying to put a different perspective on this issue. First it's telecom. What's next? I have put 20+ years in with a company. I do not wish to see government get into the private sector even if it means saving me a few bucks on my cable or Internet bill. I think that is very short sited. But, this is just my opinion. Let the flames begin. LOL! -- Of all the people I know... you're one of them. |

at least your taxes will go to something you can use, instead of being wasted on corporate welfare for companies like SBC and comcast
they get big tax breaks and grants from tax dollars, then (SBC and others) lay off workers and ship services overseas
at least local municipal services mean local jobs, rather than filling the coffers of the headquarters of some corporation 15 states over
your argument falls on its face after the word "imagine" |

Let the flames begin. LOL! You raise a valid point. The debate hinges on what each of us think the proper role of government is.
On the one had we have the highway and airline infrastructure model with public ownership of commodity infrastructure and private industry using that infrastructure to develop and offer a myriad of products.
One the other hand we had "pure play" private ownership model of the first-mile. In that case it is up to private enterprise to invest and build the access network. Having build it they have a fiduciary responsibly to maximize profit. They will do that by virtue of owning a very valuable and scarce resource develop a vertically integrated business model. This allows the owner of the first-mile access network to dictate how the network will be used.
The difficulty encouraging first-mile competition is cost is high compared to potential profit. No matter how you slice and dice it there are not going to be many players in the wired access network. Wireless is a little different in that capital cost are lower compared to revenue but it faces other technical challenges, such as bandwidth and antenna placement. The problem is limited to the first-mile access network. Cost vs revenue opportunity for the Interexchange carriers promotes health competition.
We are faced with a choice. Do we build the access network as a public commons, open to all or do we privatize it allowing a few, with the resources needed to build it, dictate the future of the Internet?

| reply to needforspeed59 You make a valid point - the only problem is that the areas that are trying to make the investment are being ignored by the incumbents to begin with. It is only when they are looking to do it themselves that the Telcos and Cablecos notice, and then only to invest the dollars to make them fail, not to provide the services to the towns to begin with.

| Here's an example of corporate welfare received by Comcast (I embolded the amount):
said by PAPowerPort: ...snip...
The Governors Action Team, economic development professionals who report directly to Governor Rendell and Secretary Yablonsky, worked with Comcast to support the project. DCED has agreed to provide a financial package of $12.75 million that includes a $4 million Opportunity Grant, $6.75 million in Job Creation Tax Credits (JCTC), and $2 million in Job Training Assistance.
...snip...
As a result, Governor Rendell has also committed $30 million in Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) funds to help to defray the costs of the improvements...
...snip...
At ~$40k per mile, PA could have deployed over 1000 miles of fiber with the money Rendell granted to Comcast. |

Thank you for thinking clearly on this issue of government in the private sector. |
