| Why fiber?
Why fiber? It is like people think if fiber comes then they will be able to get so much speed...
I don't believe so. It is like cable now. The cable at my house can probably reach 40Mbs but I am offered only 5Mbs. Sure, you can have a bit more for $$$.
Same will be with fiber. You will have fiber but your speed will be limited by your budget.
What is the sense of having fiber if you also will be getting only a fraction of what fiber offers? Better ping?
I think that broadband heaven can be given to me if they would uncap my cable modem. No need to wait for fiber. It will be the same "shit." -- -- Who drank has died, who drinks will die; is he immortal who is sober? -- -- I started out with nothing, I still have most of it -- |

They cant uncap your cable modem, since the ~40 megs down that you get is for the ENTIRE node, not dedicated to you. If you uncap it, one kid on a leeching spree will bring down the entire node, and that could be up to ~1000 people.
And upstream? HA!
With fiber you can get symmetry, like 10down/10up. Which is what most of us want now.
When FTTH rolls out in 2198, obviously telcos will not give you maximum speed at the begining. They will gradually ramp it up at a premium, to squeeze some extra $$ out of you.
Which is fine, but hopefully competition will force them to ramp up the speeds fairly hasty. |

In other news. Analysts project that by 2010 75% of those houses that don't currently have broadband, still won't have broadband. |

| reply to TexasGuy Agreed.
They will be throttling that "shit." Just look at the speeds for Verizon's FIOS:

Only up to 30mbps is offered when that strand of fiber is capable of so much more. I mean someone a few posts up stated that fiber can carry a few terabytes per sec.
I think that we will probably see other technologies such as ADSL2 before fiber gets to our homes (each FTTH install costs them around $1000). |
