| Rebuilding PC with Linux and WinXP partitions
I thought some of you might have an opinion on how I could rebuild my PC with a 40GB and a 120GB hard drive. I'd like to have Linux, Windows XP Pro, and data/apps partitions... I think. Take a look at the details and let me know what you think! -- Zepfanman Site (my page) |

3 edits | If you want WinXP on it's own drive, I'd say stick that on an NTFS partition solely on the 40 GB drive and use that for the WinXP OS and it's applications (C: ). Then, I'd maybe split the 120 GB in half (use fdisk and only use HALF the available space, leaving the rest free) and format that in NTFS as well (D: ) and use that as your "data" partition (you'll be able to read/write to this from Linux once you mount it as a drive). I'd then install your Linux distro on the remaining 60 GB of space on the 120 GB drive.
There's a ton of different ways you could accomplish this and still have it work, but that's what I would do. |

Personally, I wouldn't give Linux more than 30-40Gigs since you are going to have a seperate partition dedicated to data. |

| Sweet. I'd like to have as much space for data as is possible, so I'll hope that 30GB will be enough for Linux. I really appreciate your replies. I'm keeping track of people's suggestions through the comments on my original post.
Anyone else have any suggestions or corrections for me? |

| Do what stupergenius suggested and use FAT32 (for the data partition, not the partition Windows will be on)... I haven't tried writing to an NTFS partition from Linux before and I figured that this was out of the "experimental" stage but I guess not. |
