How? I'm just wondering. I currently only use Opera, and nothing else, but I'm very familiar with Firefox. How is K-Meleon better IYHO?

I use Maxthon..is it better? I find Maxthon to be the better IE shell than Avant, etc.

[Edit] OOOPS! I see it isn't an IE Shell. So, how is this better than Firefox? It seems OK..and pretty fast.

I will try this one out!

I just download and it seems pretty good, better than any of those IE shell like MIE2 and Avant. Does anyone know if it supports themes? I don't like the default.

@covad.net

Themes can be ported with some effort to K-Meleon, and it comes with a few different default skins. There's no easy converter tool or anything, however.

I use it because (A) it is not as slow as any of the other Gecko-based browsers on Windows, because it uses a native interface instead of relying on XUL for everything, and (B) it can customized to retain the features I want thanks to the kplugin system (or disable the features I don't want, preventing them from even using any memory), while staying slim and out of the way in terms of system resources. That's right: If you want to disable the movable window menu toolbar, tabbed browsing, mouse gestures, or even IE Favorites/Netscape bookmark/Opera hotlist support (all three of which are included), you can turn all of these features off and on in the prefs, and they won't even load into memory on the next start. That makes K-Meleon perfect for use as a kiosk browser, much more so than any other Gecko offering on Windows.

I basically use it as my default browser on multiple machines ranging from a non-MMX 200 MHz pentium (on which it flies, while Firefox doesn't even run properly) to multiple 2.2 GHz P4 systems at the office where I am in charge of over 200 users. And even better, the latest versions have come with the equivalent of FlashBlock, IEView, mouse gestures, privacy toolbar, etc. built-in, that can be disabled if you're so inclined. Even the end users for whom I've installed it have come to rely on it more than they used to rely on FireFox, just because it starts up so much faster, is just as secure.

So:

- Faster than FireFox when it comes to installation, startup, operation, and customization

- Uses less RAM

- Uses a kplugin architecture that is easier to manage on a multi-profile basis than SeaMonkey's/FireFox's extensions architecture. (Install any kplugins you like, and disable them per profile or in the default profile.)

- Pop-up blocker, naturally

- Has a UserAgent swapper like Safari and the IE frontends

- Users can set keyboard shortcuts as THEY see fit, or even disable them

- Users can author macros that K-Meleon will interpret and run in order to do web operations

- Users can create their own interface buttons that call internal operations or external programs without messing around with chrome

- Has an Opera-style configurable auto-reloader

- Independent support of Netscape bookmarks, IE favorites, and Opera hotlists. You do not have to unify them and keep them usable only in K-Meleon, you can point K-Meleon to use the default bm/fav/hl of other browsers that they will recognize and use

- Has all the features mentioned in paragraphs above

It is simply the best browser option for many people that want a small Gecko browser with features that Seamonkey and FireFox just don't offer, even when those two programs launch and run much slower than K-Meleon

Well, I do like it ... a bit.

I don't think it will click with the general public: not as easy to configure and customize like FireFox. Too many menu options are hidden and the .cfg files will scare many users away. I can see why the "Foundation" is pushing Firefox: more user friendly!

But, I do like the speed of K-meleon and I haven't even tweaked it yet!

However,I am not ready to make it my default browser(s) at this point.
