White House IT Run By Diploma-Mill "PhD"

Probably an old story to some of you, but I was surprised and entertained.

But at least give Callahan credit for getting her associate’s degree; she did some legitimate schooling after high school, right? Actually, even that is debatable. Much like Hamilton, Thomas Edison administers an external degree program for older students that gives course credits for life and work experience, with no required attendance. It has no resident faculty, no classrooms or library. The SAT is not required, and all applicants are accepted. It’s a noncompetitive correspondence school.

Which raises the question: Was Callahan even qualified for her White House job, which she got in 1996—just before the problems with the computer system for archiving and retrieving e-mails sent to key Clinton appointees? (To this day, none of the “lost” e-mails relevant to the investigations have been recovered, despite a federal court order demanding them.) Amazingly, Callahan, with just an associate’s degree and a few years of computer experience, had direct oversight of the network infrastructure and desktop computing environment used to support the offices of the president and vice president.
And another qualified IT leader:

Daniel P. Matthews, chief information officer for the Department of Transportation (which oversees the Transportation Security Administration), who got his $3,500 bachelor of science degree within eight months from diploma mill Kent College in Mandeville, Louisiana

You would think the White House would do some background checking, eh?

And she never let her employees at the Labor Department, where she served as deputy chief information officer, forget it, even demanding that they call her “Doctor.”
My years of experience have taught me that people who demand that you address them as doctor aren't worth wasting your time on. Unless they practice medicine there should be no need to call them doctor.

There are those who receive honorary doctorates (usually a celebrity giving a commencement address) that - for a time - insist on being called "doctor".

What asshats.

I met a judge at a party a few years back who turned red and belligerent after I continued addressing him as "Mister" instead of "Judge" as he was demanding. I just don't understand what leads some folks to believe they are better than other human beings.

Some are: O.J. Simpson -vs- Mother Teresa, for instance.

Ah but I'll just bet Ms Teresa never ordered anyone to address her as "Mother".

Not meaning to further the red-herring the point that the White House has no idea how to check people's work qualifications or personal character, in the English language, physicians stole the term "doctor" from teachers.

quote:
doctor
c.1303, "Church father," from O.Fr. doctour, from M.L. doctor "religious teacher, adviser, scholar," from L. doctor "teacher," from doct- stem of docere "to show, teach," originally "make to appear right," causative of decere "be seemly, fitting" (see decent).

Familiar form doc first recorded c.1850.

Meaning of "holder of highest degree in university" is first found c.1375; that of "medical professional" dates from 1377, though this was not common till late 16c.

Verb sense of "alter, disguise, falsify" is first recorded 1774.

Yes, but the only contrarian viewpoint about O.J. was with his jury.

Getting a PhD from a good university is an achievement to be proud of. Nevertheless, demanding that people address you as doctor outside the research world is personal vanity.

You'd think that someone with a PhD would learn a valuable lesson on top of what they already teach:

Respect is a two way street.

Case closed.

If you have to demand respect you probably don't deserve it.

If you demand respect you probably don't give it.

Yeah I remember that stuff. The government pays based on education and experience. So those degrees were not just used to gain better positions but also to secure more income. They should IMO be heavily fined or some of them even jailed (anyone working in Homeland security etc.) directors and such, not the grunts.

Lol I know right, they do but their main focus is on security. Where someone gets his degree from (Unless it is a PHD from Iraqi School of Business and Ethics) isnt really of much fear based concern.:p
