| [Packet8] packet 8 call quality
I also have Packet 8 phone service. I've had it almost 3 months and it still doesn't work properly. The quality is extremely poor. Calls are very muffled, break up, "staticky" and just plain hard to understand. Callers can evidently understand me pretty well but I can hardly understand them. I have DSL service. Packet 8 tech is now telling me I need a different phone. I've tried 3 phones( both "hard wired" and cordless) and get the same results. I know that they don't require all of their users to get a different phone.
Since they are a sponsor do you have any ideas as to how I might resolve this problem. They are my only phone service here and I am virtually unable to do business on the phone.
Tech can't seem to determine if it is them or dsl provider. | | Skywise

| There are several ways on how to troubleshoot connection issues. There is a utility like pingplotter that could you help determine if the bad quality is due to P8's network or your local ISP. We have someone from Packet8 monitor this forum 'on his own time' - he might be able to help you further. Also things like running downloads/filesharing/spyware and router type/firmware can affect the performance.

1 edit | Download and run ping plotter and Belarc Adviser, then post your results along with your ISP, connection, network config... Some one here will then probably be able to help. Good Luck. | | IanR

| reply to invisiongraf What's strange is that the symptons you mention are not those shared with others using a good broadband connection Quote muffled, break up, "staticky" Unquote For instance I see none of the three. My only VQ complaint is that P8 sounds a little "sharp", maybe better described at "metallic" as compared with a very good POTS line. But I have none of the break up, muffled or static type interference you mention. | | invisiongraf

@pacbell.n | All you need to do is set a static ip on your Packet 8. YOu can also set the DMZ host on your router as well. That will solve all your quality issues, unless you live in a unincorporated area like the desert. | | ikon

1 edit | reply to invisiongraf Do you realize you just posted all of your (illegal) serial numbers/registration keys for products installed on your computer? You might want to edit your post and remove those...
As far as your call quality goes, your speed tests indicate a pretty slow line. Are you using a router? Is it capable of doing QoS? If so, enable it and set a high priority to your Packet8 port. It's a night and day difference for me, and many other VoIP users. | | invisiongraf

If these are your pings then they are pretty crappy and inconsistent for running VOIP. Some of them are nearly 1000 ms ouch... I tried running Vonage in the past on a Wireless ISP with very inconsistent and sometimes crappy (600+ ms) pings and I had horrible results. I think you need a better connection... | | Skywise

| reply to invisiongraf Wow. Just.. wow. I don't see why you thought a Belarc output was needed here, much less forgot to take out your pirated cd keys.
Nevertheless, I looked at that ping plotter output, and agree with dgoner -- This signature space is for sale. I need to gather as much money as I can to cover tuition | | KeysCapt Premium,Mod join:2001-07-11 Keys Exile clubs:

| reply to voiplover said by voiplover :Download and run ping plotter and Belarc Adviser, then post your results along with your ISP, connection, network config... Some one here will then probably be able to help. Good Luck. Next time I'll make sure that I ask someone to use Belarc Adviser to just show the ports that maybe blocked! My bad. | |
