[COMCAST] 6412 picture quality

I have a new dual DCT 6412 box. Picture is fine when I hook they cable to it directly into the TV and it is also fine using the other digital box. I have hooked it up all different ways. S-Video,DVI,Component. It is worse on analog, and is still not good on digital. It seems to be the box or the signal for the 6412 is not good. night and day better with the Motorola digital box vs the new 6412 box.

Is the HD look good? The analogs usually don't look as good since the box has to convert it to digital. Have you tried setting the box to do 480i for the non hd?

HD is not available in my area and yes I tried that setting and it was still the same. I have tried every setting and also every way to hook up from the box to the TV. Picture coming from the digital box is fine just the HDTV box picture looks like CRAP. Also my TV is Samsung 26in HDTV wide screen.

I had to set the box too 480i and go with S-Video hookup, because of Picture quality through DVI was so bad on analog channels. Are there anyone else having picture quality problems on analog channels?

If you have a HDTV capable set, try this.

First turn the box off, then hit menu. A setup menu will appear. Set the output mode to 480p, 1080i, or 720p. Turn the 480i override *OFF*.

Now turn the power on and give it a try. My standard def stuff looked like poo (washed out color) until I forced the box to output them in 480p or better.

Analog cable won't ever look as good as it does direct. That's because it's encoding to MPEG-2 and playing back, just like a TiVo. Analog noise doesn't compress well so the results are never that good. Comcast is planning on digital simulcasting soon which should clear up that issue.

Re: [COMCAST] 6412 picture quality

The only way to get analog channels to look good was to to split the cable coming in one to the TV and the other to DCT 6412 box. I guess I will have to wait for digital simulcasting to come.

Look 'better', not nessessarily good. I hope they hurry up with the digital simulcast.

I had one of these boxes w/cox when they came out, yes, analog cable gets converted to mpeg2 (same encoding as dvd's/sat.). They had to set the mpeg compression to an 'average' setting to keep the thing working right for some reason. Anyway, I noticed that the pure analog signal looks much better when the cable is plugged straight into an analog tuner. Of course, then you won't be able to really use the dvr functions...
I'd see if they can up the qualilty setting on the box, maybe a firmware upgrade? For now, I think all the motorola 6412's just have a default mpeg 'average' setting for encoding analog signal.
