Networking with Telus

Hello,

I have a LinkSys non-wireless router, and was wondering if it is possible to use it with my D-Link 300g Modem with Telus. I've tried, but it doesn't seem to let me, I'm wondering if it has to do with the telus software? Also, they say that in order to network you have to use their home networking service?

Can I use my linksys router? Any special steps I should go through? Thanks a ton!!

Yes, you should be able. The internal network is behind the router and any number of computers can access the internet through it.. The only time this becomes a problem is if you need to allow outside access in. Games, p2p, or something similar, this is where port forwarding is used.

If you can't get the router to hookup we will need the model and someone will be able to help you. Though my first thought is you need a crossover cable not a straight through depending on what linksys router you have.

Thanks for the reply. The router is a model number: BEFSX41. I can get to the admin pages of the router by typing in 192.168.0.1, but I can't get out to the internet.

I have the same router and I can assure you that you can hook up a network with it and dsl. I had no problems with hooking it up and did not have to do any special set up for it to work. Plug and Play.

Double check all your wires. DSL line into the modem, line out from your modem to the router (line in port on the far left), then line out from the router to your computer(s).

Yes that will work. One Question. Did you register the mac address of the router or clone the mac address of the computer that you have had connected to the internet? If the status page show that you have a 10.?.?.? address you need to go and register the router then release and renew the router and you should be up.

If that doesn't work. Tell in detail exactly what you have done.

Or, if worst comes to worst, sign up for TELUS Home Networking -- you get 2.5 service for only a few dollars more. They'll include a Dlink wireless adsl modem/router combo unit. Plus, there is support from the helpdesk on the unit.

I never registered either computer or router. My connection worked regardless for some reason. I can only chalk it up to the fact that we upgraded from the 1.5MB package to the 2.5MB package and were previously running w/o a problem.

When I had called in about slow connection speeds, the "tech" had me register one computer without the router and software firewall up. Once registered, I could put the router back on. My speed problems had nothing to do with not being registered.

You need to register the WAN/internet mac address of the router with telus.

If your in default mode you shouldn't have to register the mac address of the router because default is cloning of you pc's mac address.

However you can Create a new mac adress for you router in the option clone mac adress.

Next register the mac address you created at oca.bc.hsia.telus.net

with manual registeration and click submit.

now reconnect your modem to your router and try connected via wireless again but dont forget to refresh the dchp on your router first.

Linksys routers don't clone by default as its a bad policy.

If you've ever had to deal with a default install of a sis900 based NIC then you'd know why cloning should only be as a temporary measure or if theres no other choice.

With the ability to use the registeration page, cloning isn't needed.

( SIS 900 nics were released with a factory set "test" mac address that wasn't unique, easily fixed by updating the driver.)
