| Java does not run applets
Here is a good example of the saying: "If it ain't broke don't fix it!" I had been using an old version of Java for some time and it worked fine for opening applets on dslreports.com. I don't remember why.....but I decided to download the most recent version. I uninstalled the old and installed the latest version.....and now I cannot open ANY applets. I checked all the complicated suggestions from Java but to no avail. All I want to do is use the applets on dslreports. Any suggestions? Thanks. |

| buy not running applets what do you mean? Do you get a gray box with a red 'X' or the little java tea cup? Have you tried going back to the previous version. Also, how did you install it? Did you use the online or offline installer. -- O! - H! ..... I! - O! |

| By not running applets I mean when I click on, for instance,"Speed Test", nothing happens and all I see is the grey box with the red "X". Unfortunately when I uninstalled the old version I deleted all references to Java in Explorer. I tried both on line and offline installer. I am using Windows 98 SE and I am not sure if the old Java was the Microsoft old version of Java. Also at one point, on bootup I was getting notice "cannot find Javasup.vxd"...but this dissapeared later. Do you know if the old Microsoft Java version is still available for download and will it work with with dslreports applets? Hope this helps. Thanks for the reply. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Jay. |

I personally wouldn't use the MS VM, it's a buggy, incomplete knock off of the java standard, and I don't think you can download it from their site anymore, though you might try to search for it if you really want it.
With that said, what version of Sun Java did you try to install? The red X means either something is buggered in the install, or the applet isn't coming down the java container properly. -- O! - H! ..... I! - O! |

| The Java Control Panel shows Version 1.4.2.-06. Here is something interesting. When I click on "Verify your Java version" on the Speed Test Page I get this notice: "Your browser does not support Java, so nothing is displayed". It seems that the PC cannot find the program. When I go to Control Panel there is a Java Icon and when I double click on it....up comes the Java Control Panel. Strange? |

| I checked IE Tools/Internet Options/Advanced. Under Java (Sun) there is check in Box: "Use Java2v1.4.2_06 (Requires Restart)
Under Microsoft VM no box is checked. Now when I try to run a Java Applet I receive: "Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, this page may not display correctly" I am using a DSL Modem with NAT, Norton AV, and Zone Alarm set for Medium Security. (please continue to send email notifications. I inadvertantly clicked on "do not send email" Thanks. |

If this is the case then you will have to go into the security settings and monkey with them till it works. As I don't do a lot of browsing in IE I won't be able to help you much.
As for sending email notifications, I have no way to do that, the boxes that are used to control that only allow notifications to be delivered to you, not to be send to everyone else. -- O! - H! ..... I! - O! |

| reply to w2ltu Look in the Tools -> Internet Options -> Temporary Internet Files -> Settings -> View Objects. Delete any Java objects named with your previous version. Sometimes they don't get removed when the old version is uninstalled.
Can you tell me what "when I uninstalled the old version I deleted all references to Java in Explorer" means? What else did you do when you removed to older version? -- Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness. . . Isa. 5:20 |

When I uninstall programs I use Windows Add/Remove Programs. After uninstalling Java I went to FIND Files and entered Java. I then deleted all references to Java it showed that were still on my hard drive. I have wondered if I deleted some needed file in this process? I will now look for Java objects as you suggested. Thanks. |

| I found 2 "Java Runtime Environment 2" Files. One file had no content and other 35 KB. I removed both files. They were of recent date. (I have uninstalled and reinstalled Java so many times, I can't keep track) I tried to run Java applet again with Norton AV and Zone Alarm disabled but still NG. Thanks for trying. Jay |

I notice now a reference to javasup.vxd. That is an MS system file. You can download the file or any others you may have inadvertently deleted here. Deleting files as you did is fine but I would suggest you look at the file properties in the future and determine who is the author before doing so. -- Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness. . . | PROBLEM SOLVED! After following all the suggestions from Java and others, I thought I would try one last thing before giving up on using Java to open applets on broadbandreports.com. I uninstalled version j2re-1.4.2_06, downloaded an old JAVA version j2re-1.3.1_15 and installed it. IT WORKED RIGHT OFF THE BAT!......WITH NORTON AV AND ZONE ALARM ENABLED OR DISABLED.Nothing else was changed.... no settings etc. Is there a BUG in the latest Java version?? It would seem so. If you are having problems with the latest version of JAVA, before trying all the complicated FIXES? from JAVA, I would first try using the older version of the software. HOPE THIS INFORMATION WILL HELP SOMEONE. Thanks for all the suggestions. HAPPY NEW YEAR. |

| No, there is no bug, at least none that would cause the problem you had. I'm glad you got it working but I would suggest that at some point you might try re-installing the 1.5 version.
One suggestion I would have, assuming you don't already do so, is disable the AV anytime you install software. An AV running in the background during a setup can really cause problems. -- Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness. . . Isa. 5:20 |
