| Setting Up New Service
I'm helping a friend by setting up a new cable modem for Insightbb service. Supposedly the cable company has run a new line up to the point where the cable modem will be installed. My friend has purchased a cable modem, wireless router, and NIC card. I basically need to know what it takes to have the modem activated. IIRC, I would simply need to connect it and call Insight with the MAC address of the modem. It should then be live after a few seconds, right?
Also, after I connect the router for them, would it be best to simply set it for a cable modem connection or should I clone MAC address of the modem. I have helped other friends set up service and had to 'authenticate' each computer on the network. This required being redirected to Insight's authentication page on their gateway which can sometimes take a while. Is this still the way they function? If so, can someone please post the URL to that authentication page? IIRC it was sas.r31.insightbb.com.
I'm pretty capable of setting up the router configuration from that point. I'd appreciate any help you're able to offer on setting Insightbb service quickly. |

| If indeed the line is run and is ready...you can set it up without insight..you will need the white sheet with your account info from insight off the top of my head... 1) hookup equipment (router, modem,pc) 2) pull a DHCP address which is automatic if your router is set to use DHCP it will be in the 10.x.x.x subnet 3) web browser 12.223.2.9 4) enter requested info and this will register your modem and your border router's mac
You have a router so you will need only 1 IP so you dont need to "authenticate" each pc...you only need to register your border device mac and the router will NAT your public IP to the IP's on your private network...if you dont have your account info you will need to call the dreaded insight "help" line |

| Thanks for the speedy reply. I guess what made me think that every computer had to be 'authenticated' was that last year I helped a friend in the military get his computer online. He was deployed for over 6 months. When we went to use the computer again, he had to reach that silly authentication page. Come to think of it though, he WAS connected to a router but we had to hook his computer directly to the modem because his router was fried.
What you say makes sense. Still appreciate any advice anyone is able to offer. |

| reply to jhacker Thanks all for the help. I got the modem and router installed for them, with some pain. The modem was a D-Link and the router was a Linksys 54g. I would have chosen different brands, but that's beside the point. I could see the router was picking up a 10.*.*.* IP. I was able to go to Insight's registration page at the URL given by 'ripn'. However, after entering the registration code and such, I was getting 'page cannot be displayed' errors. We tried rebooting the cable modem and renewing the IP address to no avail. Unfortunately, we had to install that crap software to get any further.
Finally, my friends were surfin' and amazed at the 'instant' display of web pages that they were not used to!! That's what happens when you're on dial-up for over 5 years. Here's to hoping each computer doesn't have to have the Insight software in order to function correctly. I imagine it should be straightforward from this point WITHOUT having to reinstall the software. Thanks for the pointers. |

| As the FAQ and several of my links pointed out. There in fact is no need for the software. The url given to you by qos is included in the FAQ and links above. Along with detailed instructions on how to get things up and running without the software. I'm running two machines with a VOIP adapter and router on Insight without using any of their software. I detailed that in one of the links above. The VOIP adapter is the device registered with Insight. My router is connected to it. The other pc is connecting wireless to the router.

| I know what you're saying, but we could not get through the entire process UNTIL the software was installed. Maybe I was not being patient enough, but IE 'page could not be displayed' errors were happening after a certain point in the authentication process. This was even after rebooting the modem, the router, and the computer. In fact, I made sure IE had no 'proxy server' set. I came very close to having to call non-support, but I decided to be patient instead. Perhaps it just took a while as I noticed your pages stated that a new account actually has to go through 2 processes: the SAS and ICOMPS. It may have also been a coincidence that DNS worked after installing the software. I forgot to note at what point we received an IP from the 12.*.*.* pool instead of 10.*.*.*. |
