 [Vonage] RT31P2 Sound Qualilty

Others report white noise with the Linksys RT31P2, which I have with my newly installed router, plus I the sound has a hollow or tinnie character. Is this normal?

The white noise, I think, is fairly normal (not uncommon). I had this as well, but through the course of several e-mails to their tech support (dslreports@vonage.com), that issue was somehow resolved. I haven't heard much about the other issues you're having. What firmware and voice version is the router reporting? What codec do you have it set on (the "bandwidth saver" function on Vonage's web portal)?

@optonline.net

Both the RT31P2 and PAP2 have a higher level of white noise that normal and it annoys the heck out of me especially when I use headphones. I have contacted both Vonage and Linksys about this and they both are pointing fingures at each other. Vonage says they are waiting for Linksys to fix their firmware. Linsksys says see Vonage for a replacement unit. It's a shame because other than the background hiss, the audio quality and features are pretty good. It worked out of the box with my tivo and alarm system. However, if they don't fix this hiss in the next couple of months I am gone. Will just wait for Packet8 to go with 7 digit dialing ....... GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER VONAGE AND TELL PEOPLE THE REAL STORY ON THE UNACCEPTIBLE BACKGROUND NOISE !!!!

I requested a replacement RT31P2 and that it be TESTED before they sent it out to me.
They sent me a replacement that does not have the white noise problem. So they do exist but many are noisy.

The bandwidth saver is set to "highest sound quality." Firmware version is 1.26.01; Voice vers. 2.0.12.

BTW I tried a different handset and phone wire, but the quality was unaffected.

I've just had vonage for about a week now and my Linksys unit had the same issue. Vonage was unable to resolve it and I asked them to replace it with the Motorolla unit, which arrived today. I've placed a few calls using the Motorolla and the problem appears to be gone.

I don't know this for a fact, but, having a RT31P2 with the noise problem, then having it go away after Vonage twiddled some settings, I've just got to believe that there is some "Vonage only accessible" setting in the unit that can control "comfort noise" - which is what I think this is - it's just set to an "uncomfortable" level from the factory. Vonage has got to be taking a beating changing out these units. I wish someone there would get a clue (you'd think they would have by now). Has anyone, other than me, overcome the "noise" problem without changing units?

Don't have it on mine Did when I first started out but a couple calls to them and it's gone. I also rewired my phone system from which I was getting some noise. Bottom line except for a slightly "digital" sound the Vonage line is about on par with my pots line. The Vonage line seems to be more picky about the vagaries of certain cordless phones. Wondering if the fact they are "digital" cordless phones has something to do with this.
My new wrinkle is the fax line. Got a fax line set up and things went pretty well but yesterday I had tech on the line for over an hour and half and could not get things resolved. He recommended reducing the baud rate of my unit to 9600 but I cannot find ANY documentation from Xerox on how to accomplish this (Xerox XE90FX).
Anybody got any ideas?

I think there are probably different issues going on here.
Those that report it "just going away" may be on cordless phones and rearranged things. Just speculating.
My original RT31P2 had a hiss without even hooking up to anything other than a power brick and phone. This hiss was the same on both RJ11 ports.
Emails to Vonage support mostly went unanswered but one reply said he made some "adjustment" my my settings but it did not help the situation at all.
I phoned support, explained the situation, was told a batch (perhaps several hundred) were bad and a replacement could be sent out. I asked it be checked manually before sending it out and the tech said OK. A week later the replacement arrived and the noise was an order of magnitude less (although IMO not gone) but it passed the "wife test" with flying colors. Same sound on both ports BTW.
I sent the old router back on my dime but an email to Vonage with my shipping expenses enumerated resulted in an immediate credit to my account.
Also the same day UPS said the old router was delivered to Vonage in NJ I got a email saying they received the old router and it was removed from my account. Kudo's to the returns department.

Well, I am one of those for which the hiss just "went away" after corresponding with tech support. I'm sure it wasn't the phone though. The hiss was present even with the corded model I tried it on and I didn't change the arrangement of the phones, the router, the modem or anything. I still think Vonage changed some setting, because now the line is dead quiet - so quiet, in fact, that my soon to be obsolete POTS line sounds noisy as hell to me and I'd never noticed it before. Just speculating, as well.

Enough already... Vonage is dropping the ball here. They should fess up to the real issue and tell people how they plan to fix it. Bad batch of units.... waiting on firmware from Linksys.. what is the real story? They are betting their business on a piece of junk hardware the way I see it. I am not going to spend my time sending boxes back and forth. They can either come clean on this issue to save their current and future customer base or after my 3 month test period I am gone.

This is such a dead issue its a joke...Actually its minor and ya seemingly get used to it and not know its there. At least the phantom reboots ended with both routers and the QOS is great so whats the big deal on this. Im happy with it now after demanding something done with the 1.24.01 joke firmware. And to think of all the routers people sent back and for what. The RT31P2 and WRT54GP2 at this point is about as good as you could want and I can say this Linksys is paying attention. Better coordination is coming and this issue clearly lies with Vonage. And don't ya love it when tech support acts like they never had anybody with the issue...overall though I'm very satisfied with it as is now.

Cheers

I emailed dslreports@vonage.com to request a replacement Linksys and received what is now the standard reply:

"We have notified Linksys of this issue with some of the phone adapters.
They are currently working on a resolution which should be out shortly.
In the mean-time, if you would like, we could send a replacement phone adapter to you. We can send you a Motorola phone adapter which doesn't have the problem with the white-noise. Please let me know if this is what you want and I will arrange shipment of the device."

I am not inclined to change out the Linksys for the Motorola since my other router is Linksys and it took some time to configure the new router. I will be patient and put up with the inferior sound quality until Vonage and Linksys resolve the issue.

Am I doing the right thing or should I take them up on their offer to supply a Motorola unit?

If they do fix it in a reasonable (few weeks max) I'd stick with the Linksys.
QOS, works behind routers etc.
I had mine replaced and the noise level is greatly reduced but not totally eliminated. If they can further eliminate it it would be nice.
