Re: Blocking PTP programs?

Well I firmly believe they are using some kinda blocking or filtering. When the complaints first started coming to light I noticed winmx and shareaza would not work , then all the sudden they worked. Now I don't download alot 5-10 gig a month probably , now all the sudden the past week Winmx and Shareaza has been very spotty at best sometimes it works and sometimes It just connects and does nothing.

I really can't justify paying that much to just surf the net and download a few demo's etc . Now before everyone get's all bent saying I am doing illegeal stuff well I am not. I have discovered alot of artist and music I probably would have never listen to normally and if I like something I buy it.

There are alot of legit uses for BT and P2P it's just to bad everyone focuses on the bad.

A properly patched XP machine ( meaning running SP2 ) is the same as if you were to use Firefox etc. As was mentioned above. A user who takes just basic security steps will not be a victim of malware, spyware, virus, trojan or worm. We've had a few previous threads in this forum on how to keep yourself safe. The Insight help section of their webpage has some good tips. I've also done several blog post and post in the security forum on this. The post above shows that the user in fact doesn't understand the BitTorrent technology. Unlike Kazaa ( and others ) there are hash checks within BitTorrent. To make sure that content hasn't been tampered with. Depending on the client you've chosen to use. You can in fact have other security options to enable. And again with a properly configured machine. Your not going to become infected anyway.

Some of you guys need to learn how to operate a PC. Virus's and Spyware are not a problem on a properly setup PC, even while running P2P programs. P2P will never be completely blocked, learn to deal with it.

The only way to be 100% safe is unplug your internet connection, of course that's not a real alternative.

You won't get any more viruses from bit torrent than you will from using IE.

Actually, chances of getting a virus from BT is even slimmer, as the seeder/tracker has to deliberately stick a virus in the file. Once that's found out it'll be known widely very shortly.

no, Insight does not block p2p programs. Although the spyware and viruses you get through them are always fun to troubleshoot lol

When did you have this problem and where are you? In Champaign -Urbana there was a P2P problem Monday that was similar to the one that people were having from Sept-Nov. This issue was resolved by about 2AM Tuesday. It could have been maintenance or an actual problem. I have a torrent going at 400K/15K down/up right now.

I still don't think Insight has been blocking p2p. Sure there were problems for 3 months that could have been blocking but they were fixed sometime after Thanksgiving. If they invested in p2p blocking technology I highly doubt they would abandon it's use so quickly. This does not rule out the possibility that they were only testing it here to collect data and decide if they wanted to go that route. There is not enough evidence to know one way or another. If there is a problem in you area perhaps it is some form of maintenance. Call tech support and find out. Keep asking for higher ups if they give you the run around.

Only those who don't take basic security measures get infected from P2P. With that said - just popping open your browser - yes even with the beloved Firefox can get you infected nowadays. If your not on your toes - fully patched and running basic security.

I've not seen any blocking on Insight's part in regards to P2P. There of course was the big thread on if Insight has put in place some filtering. If memory serves me correctly. They have denied doing this. Other providers have come forward to state they are filtering P2P traffic. This of course doesn't mean Insight is. I do use BitTorrent from time to time. I've seen no issues in regards to it's usage. I don't use standard ports for it. And I do try to limit my upload if I'm using it at a peak time of day. I think most hardcore P2Pers will be going old school soon. IRC and newsgroups are again coming back into fashion. Not that they ever became unpopular or forgotten. Just not as main stream as others.

I'd find it interesting if anyone could provide solid evidence of filtering or blocking of certain programs. I'm sure this could be put in place region specific. So I've always said their may be some areas seeing something in use. I'm not seeing anything at this time. I can max out my upload and download speed using my chosen client. Part of the reason I try to remember to throttle my speeds.

I have to agree with "Turdhat" (what a name !). These programs have caused me many headaches at home and at work. They are often enbedded with spyware and trojans and turn Windows and I.E to mush ! Im sure there are methods to avoiding those problems however your average user will get their pc owned. I hope isp's start blocking them as well as it will make the internet faster, and help curtail theft of music.

I hope they do block p2p stuff. After working for an isp I can say that these things spread viruses and cause more problems than they are worth ! They cause isp's massive headaches and causes network admins to pull thier hair our. A person ay my work had it installed and flooded my whole damn network with viruses ! Die p2p Die !
