It's nothing new, except for the free part. You no doubt subscribe to a service from one of the credit reporting agencies. The notification services as well as unlimited or multiple access will still be available as subscription services. Free credit reports were usually available on a "trial" subscription basis from various companies, but you would have to cancel within a short time.
Federal law used to require free reports only when you were declined credit based on information in an agency's report. The creditor was required to mail you a "dear John" notice with the addresses of the credit reporting agencies. Certain states required free reports, others limited the fee to various amounts between $ and $12. This new federal law requires free reports, once a year, to all consumers, from all three reporting agencies. |
