Using a router as protection

Hello,
I read alot about using the router as a level of protection and I have a question. I use the Dlink 604 router and I basically just plugged my cables in and was able to connect. Do I need to go in the router settings to activate further protection measures or is that enough? There are a bunch of settings in there that I have no idea what they do and I dont want to just start clicking things as everything is working well now. I also use Zone alarm pro.
Thanks

I use the same router and ZA pro. The router blocks all ports by default. You really only have to make changes to settings if you want to open ports to play multiplayer games, or use MSN messenger and things like that. Other than that, you should be protected out of the box, but you may want to go to ShieldsUp to test your ports. It was very helpful to me.

Use a router as an incoming firewall, and a software solution as an outgoing one. I personally use apps like ZA and Sysgate to keep various apps from accessing the network. My mouse driver does not need to phone home.
