only thing i run is norton antivirus 2005...........the way i see it is i am a hardcore gamer so a firewall does two things for me. one it is a resource hog, and i have no use for that kind of item running while i am gaming and second, if anyone wants in your PC they will gain access no matter what precautions you see fit to take against it. just my 2 cents
and what happens when someone hacks into your system putting trojans and such among other things that cause your system to slow down and to hog all your bandwidth? then you are sol again

Smoothwall Express w/DHCP pack and a bomb-ass hosts file (on the firewall) to stop ads, along with Windows firewall on my XP machines.

Not entirely concerned about outbound traffic, as the bad stuff doesn't get in to phone home in the first place.

If it does, I have the usual suspects installed to get rid of them.

My VMware machines are using Sygate firewalls.

Router: Toshiba Magnia SG30: Redhat 8 based with PPoE Router, NAT, IP Chains Firewall with customizable rules and Content filtering.

Desktops: XP SP2 with McAfee AV, Adaware and Spybot. No firewalls active on the desktops. Default browser is FF 1.0 on all machines.

Worst problem seems to be occasional adware from site the kids visit.

I use sygate on my desktop and window firewall on the notebook. Sygate has a feature that allow my notebook to access the desktop folders and printer. Window firewall in my notebook works just fine.

What option does Trend Micro's Software Firewall fall under? Well, with that, I only have ports for incoming services like http, ftp, smtp, pop3, because I run a server and that's pretty much it.

other homebuilt linux box (asus pundit) running fedora core 3 with 3 nic cards

transparent bridge with iptables firewall rules... and
vpn.

need bridge because running with 29 static ips and default gateway is on same subnet as ips so cannot route.

Running a Westell DSL modem configured for NAT, a Linksys WRTG54, and ZA free. Running 2+ years with BellSouth and not one single problem. Damn!!!
