The Security Firewall Poll - 2004

Well, I've come across two Firewall Polls in the past - created by Wildcatboy See Profile, our forum host. The FAQ here: »Security »Which firewall should I use? - should point you to both polls posted in 2001, and another in 2002. So, here's a brand-new, out-of-the-box Firewall poll .. 2004!

I'll pretty much quote Wildcatboy See Profile from here:

If your option is not there, choose other. If your situation is unique, then you figure it out yourself.

Just don't forget to post and explain things. If you are voting "other" tell us what. If you use a router, then you may want to let us know which brand. If you pick "a router and a software firewall", then let us know which, etc... You get the drift.
The last firewall Poll had 2376 votes. Let's see how many votes we can pile up and how long we can get this thread up for all to see.

What kind of firewall / Intrusion detection System do you use?

Ditto except I have ZAP instead of Sygate. I also have a ton of other programs running as well. I love a layered system even though I know that the only true, 100% way of not having a problem is by cutting the cord from the system and the wall outlet.

Router and s/w firewall(ZAF5.1.033) here. However, when I do port scans(here and grc.com) I get the the same results whether I'm behind my router(BelkinF5D-5230) or not. After a little experimentation I've found out my ISP's dsl modem has NAT, so I don't feel I need the router(because my ISP and their modem's NAT) but I use it anyway to hook up all my boxen. (OT-I'm thinking one's ISP may affect how one sets up ones security. Very curious to know if ISP's make a difference to others -maybe a new thread?):)

I'm behind my Linksys BEFSX41 and NIS2003 (along with AdAwareSEPlus, SpyBot, SpyWareBlaster, TrojanHunter, IESpyAd and other tools/utilities such as ProcessExplorer, BelarcAdvisor and the like!) I guess I feel pretty secure! YMMV!

As is so often said, "I wouldn't be so paranoid if they all weren't out to get me!"

LMAO, you're pretty damn vulnerable there, no retinal scanning to gain access to the system?

No retinal scanning yet but what about that MS thumbprint thing that came out not long ago?

In addition to the Linksys BEFSR41 router, I have 2Wire Home Portal 1000SW DSL modem with its excellent firewall. I have NIS2004, ADware, SpyBot and SpyWareBlaster.

If this isn't enough, I can only restrict myself to specific domains and specific IP addresses as my last attempt to secure myself.

Voted ZoneAlarm Pro - but I'm using the ZoneAlarm Security Suite. Linksys WRT54G will be coming back into the mix in the next few months. But it's currently not part of my setup.

ZoneAlarm Pro version 5.5.062.000
Product update service expires in 82 days (I will renew)
My copy is unregistered, but still seems to work.
A router will be added within a week, but it's primary purpose will be for multiple connections with the security attributes just a byproduct.

Router and software firewall. All systems behind a Linksys WRT54G. My main computer uses Norton Personal Firewall 2003 (with adblock), whereas the rest uses Kerio 2.1.5.

ZAP. Had Linksys BEFSR41 router in place, but due to freeze-ups and no "off" capabilities, I'm back to just ZAP. I'll take my chances. Other apps include NAV Pro 2004, Spywareblaster, Spywareguard, IE-Spyad, locked down IE & Outlook Express, don't surf for porn, p2p, warez, etc. Education (voraciously read this forums's security threads) & exercising common sense are my best defenses. May fire NAV Pro 2004 to use McAfee instead, however.
