Increase in Alternatives

It's good to see that alternative models are popping up. Something will stick someday.

The music industry won't be the ones that will find the solution that succeeds. So, having 3rd party developers and others coming up with all these alternatives that we're seeing more and more of lately is great.

I wish there was a system to pay the artists directly bypassing the labels. I'd be all for paying the artists & not pirate music as long as the money went SOLELY to the artist. Until that happens, I will be "stealing" music from the newsgroups. The labels & RIAA raped me for years in the late 80's & 90's with their price fixing (which they were convicted for) and I'm justifying my theft as getting even for paying 18 bucks a CD 10 years ago. I have over 300 CD's I've bought so I've got a ways to catch up. Eye for an eye.

I second that. The RIAA deserves not a single penny! Hope there are more alternatives like this one.

how do you figure the label shouldn't get any money, there the ones taking all the risk its there money making the albums and promoting them. they are entitled to a return on there investment. and considering they are the ones taking all the risk they are entitled to the majority of the profits

So...do you think it is fair that an artist selling gold and platinum sales gets about 2 to 4% of the profit while the label gets 40 to 70%?
Whilst the labels are putting the face and investment to promote the artist, they do not pay them well for it. It is to assume that the album will get the promotion and exposure to get the artists gigs. And that there is another issue as the artist will be going through a promoter that will charge him another percentage of the total ticket sales. And even that depends on the relationship he has with the "middlemen".

Do the numbers....the multinationals are sucking the artists dry.
Indies are fairing better. That is why RIAA places the blame on their slump in sales to P2P when in fact their product realls sucks and the indies are capitalizing on that hole.

The risks the RIAA take is in pushing off the "Ashlee Simpsons" of the world, as legitimate artists, and expecting us to pay $15-$20 for a CD of this crap.
When you are selling "TRUE" talent, there is NO risk!

they stand a chance of being bought out by a record label if they do stay alive

Personally, I like suggestions that relate to elimination of the RIAA and recording companies and payment of artists directly. But, that's a large step and we can only start with baby steps.

I would hope that if some enterpreneuer(s) can come up with a system that works for both the recording industry and consumers, that it wouldn't matter who owns the technology.

I have a feeling it won't be that easy and that the recording industry will be dragged along kicking and screaming. One can hope though.
