| Cell phone list for Solicitors?
Not sure if this would be the right forum so if not mod please move.
Is this true?????
I was told there was going to be a directory of cell phone numbers published soon & that this opens the door to solicitors calling cell phones. Was told that the Federal Trade Commission has set up a do not call list. You must call FROM the number you wish to register. The number is 1-888-382-1222, OR you can click on the link below to register your cell phones on line.

| i am not sure if this is still going forward or not. it has been a while since i heard anything about it. however when i did hear about the possibility of a cell phone directory i heard that there would be certain conditions on doing such a thing. one condition was that the ability to harvest the list had to be severly limited so it would not be possible to get bulk listings from it like a printed phone directory can be used for.
i also understand that just like with a landline phone an option to be unlisted also has to be offered. but the cell carriers will have the option of charging a fee to keep a number unlisted.
even considering those factors you are giving some great advice. put your cell phone number on the federal do not call list and take the extra precautions. i know my cell phones are registered on there for quite a while now.
peace out, dumwaldo |

It is already illegal for a telemarketer to call a cell phone. In the law it states something like "may not call a number that may incur a charge to the person being called." I've only received one telemarketing call, and that is only because I have my cell phone number listed on one of my websites. I won't register it with the list, because it is already illegal, so if the telemarketer are going to break the law, they will do it whether or not I'm already on the list. -- Visit the un-official OOL web site. »www.OptOnline.tk |

Actually the only restriction is using automatic dialers to call cellphones; this is an FCC restriction and not really a law. So it's still a good idea to have your number put on the do-not-call list. - sheureka |

| It is actually "automatic dialers and prerecorded messages." And now-a-days how many telemarketers don't use automatic dialers?? -- Visit the un-official OOL web site. »www.OptOnline.tk |

| reply to sheureka The rule was either specifically put into place or put into place because of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, and it prevents automatic dialers to ALL individual telephones (not businesses), not just phones where it costs the consumer to receive the call (although there are less restrictions for non-cell phones).
The only problem is that the act isn't well enforced. |

I believe that the law that you talking about set guidelines that telemarketers had to follow. One of them was that if they used automatic dialers and/or recordings, they were supposed to start talking within 2 seconds after the phone was answered. Another provision of this law was that telemarketers were forced to disclose their number on the Caller ID. I do, believe, however, that the National Do Not Call Registry supersedes all previous laws. By the way, you can register both cell as well as land-line phone numbers with DNC.
said by mballard :The only problem is that the act isn't well enforced. I would say that before DNC Registry anti-telemarketing laws were indeed not enforced too well. But IMHO, it is because of the way these laws were worded, and it was extremely difficult to gather the evidence against offending telemarketer to take them to court for violation of one of these laws. But luckily, the DNC Registry seems to be working (at least for me). Since it was enacted, I've received 2 calls from this one company. After I reported them on the DNC web site, I never heard from them again. I then received another 2 calls with recording from another company, where recording specifically stated that they were exempt from DNC. I reported them as well just for the hell of it; and strangely enough, their calls stopped as well. I'm not sure if the government actually did anything to these companies as I've never heard back from any law enforcement agencies regarding my complaints, but the calls have promptly stopped. -- Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies... I am sending this to you so that you can register before December 15. It may still take up to 3 months for the calls to stop, but if you do not register the calls will come starting January 1, 2005.
Please read the following: Starting Jan 1, 2005, all cell phone numbers will be made public to telemarketing firms. So this means as of Jan 1, your cell phone may start ringing off the hook with telemarketers, but unlike your home phone, most of you pay for your incoming calls. These telemarketers will eat up your free minutes and end up costing you money in the long run.
According to the National Do Not Call List, you have until Dec. 15th 2004 to get on the national "Do not call list" for cell phones. They said that you need to call 1-888-382-1222 from the cell phone that you wish to have put on the "do not call list" to be put on the list. They also said you can do it online at www.donotcall.gov »www.donotcall.gov . Registering only takes a minute, is in effect for 5 years and will possibly save you money (definitely frustration)!
Cheers

1 edit | reply to TarkuS Why that message was sent, I have no idea, but both the phone number and website are valid (that is the phone number that is listed on the donotcall.gov website, which I know is the right website).
One time it would definately be a good idea to put your cell phone number on the list is if you ported it from a landline, so that telemarketers wouldn't be able to tell the difference. |

| reply to pa555 On the Today Show this morning, it was said that the 411 directory for cell phone numbers would be an "opt-IN" listing, not an "opt-OUT" (though the closing statement kind of contradicted that). It was also stated that cell providers had the option of participating in this directory and that Verizon has said they will not (for the moment).
Apparently, there is no pending change of law that would suddenly allow telemarketers to call cell phones. That was a leap of logic based on the forthcoming cellular number directory and the fact that *some* people have had their land line numbers ported over to their cell phones, which has led to them receiving such calls.
Sounded like this was a false alarm, but folks can place their cell number on the Federal DnC list (keeping in mind that political parties and other entities are immune from the restriction).
