Do I have a secutity problem?

I have a home network that is both wired and wireless. 128bit security is enabled. On one laptop (runing XP)when I go to turn it off, I sometimes get the prompt "another user is logged on to this computer do you want to shut down". I checked the DHCP and there were only the computers on my network listed. I am running Norton Utilities and other than the routers protection do not have a firewall. I have not yet installed SP2.

Any suggestions?

Without seeing it I would believe it is reporting the other pc's on your network as the ones being logged on.I have 2 in mine and if I access one from the other then shut the other down it reports the same as yours. As long as you are not seeing unfamiliar users logged on no need to worry.

I agree with FoMoCo See Profile's assessment. I routinely see this myself if I've accessed another PC on the network and then try to shutdown. You should recognize the machine name that its reporting as connected though, no?

As both FoMoCo See Profile, and dp See Profile related, I too have seen this occur, though I only have experience in fully "wired" situations. And as both have said, the machine name had better be that of _your_ other machine.

I think it's a warning, just in case there is a reason _not_ to shut down the machine (i.e. an application is running on it that the other machine/user requires, print server...).

Just for some wireless reassurance, you might want to check out keith2468 See Profile's Security Forum FAQ »Security »How do I secure a wireless network (wireless router)? . hth
