| He got what he deserved. This person leeched of the society, and destructively too. He made million times more damage to others, than he did profit for himself.
He first should serve 9 years in pound me in the ass prison, for wasting other peoples money. Then he should be sent to some uninhabited island, and left there, since he is a leecher. Let him leech of gorillas or something. |

| Ok, well if 9 years is fair for the spammer, then 4 1/2 years for anyone who refuses to patch their servers thus allowing the spam to go thru, as well as become a gateway for the spammer.
Now that wouldnt be fair at all would it? But its fitting with the tone of most of these posts. Anyone who studies justice and/or ethics, will say, that this is unjust and overkill. Now he is costing US a lot more money everyday for the next 9 years!
But hey since it Bothers Me, and I dont want to take two seconds to hit a delete key or 5 seconds to set up a filter. Lock him up..... Harsh Fines and Community service would have better served Justice in a case like this. But hey why get justice when you can get votes instead..

| Havent studied economics much have we?
THERE IS NO FREE LUNCH.
Spam does not cost you pennies. It costs you dollars/month. Do you not realize that?
There is no big and good company that simply absorbs all the losses to spam. YOU PAY FOR IT IN THE END.
Jeez.
Yes, if you think about it from your point of view, its harsh "omgad, 9 years for doing 3 clicks". But people like him did more than one BILLION dollars worth of damage. Type in spam into google, and read up. I do not care about the inconvenience of spam, I care about the financial strain that is does.
Why should someone work 16 hours a day on low paid physically DIFFICULT jobs, (not like a lot of us here sitting on our asses), and get just enough to feed his family. Yet some fat slob, presses 3 buttons, resulting billions dollars worth of damage, and on top of that, get paid very well too.
Only when you look at the big picture, you will realize that his punishment is not anywhere NEAR harsh. If someone stole a billion dollars from some government fund, would 9 years be ok? If so, then how is this any different? |

| reply to t10 No the big picture is not the 9 years for spam, but for the fraud he/they committed. (Promising products that did not exist) and for that he is getting off easy... but for the spam angle of it.....
As for costing me dollars a month, that's nice, but if he was locked up for JUST spam itself, now its costing not just the people, servers, companies that it went thru, but Everyone, MANY DOLLARS A DAY to, cloth, feed and house him.
As for financial strain, yes it does, but so do regular junk mail and direct mail marketing.
I personally think spam is a joke, as is all direct mail marketing methods, But as long as there are that half percent of people that respond to it, it will never go away. And it can be stopped. But that would cost a upfront investment, that most do not want to do.
Oh and yes I have studied economics, for quite a while even. I just believe that it is up to the consumer to degrade the benefits of spam, for it to stop. -- RAM: Window's drug of choice since 1986 Forum Posts:(To many to Count, not enough to brag about) |

| reply to KillTHemAll BBR left out a lot of inforamtion. THis was more about fraud that spam. Never take any report you read as gospel.
Prosecutors compared Jaynes and DeGroot to modern-day snake oil salesmen who use the Internet to peddle junk like a "FedEx refund processor" that supposedly allowed people to earn $75 an hour working from home.
In one month alone, Jaynes received 10,000 credit card orders, each for $39.95, for the processor.
"This was just a case of fraud," said prosecutor Gene Fishel. "This is a snake oil salesman in a new format."

| There was a time not too long ago when this sort of "work from home" scheme actually made up a pretty high percentage of spam. And if the current large sources of spam are ever shut down, these other sources will still need to be dealt with to keep mailboxes as clean as possible. Plus, it may always put a damper on spammers in general to see some of their ilk going to jail, even if for more obvious frauds. |

Agree, People on the internet have to face the reality that Jeremy Jaynes won't do the full nine years because of all the overcrowding in both state and Federal prisons.
The problem is that with Jaynes in prison, their will be another person to take his place, so the problem will continue without any slow down of junk email across the internet. -- »www.antihotmail.com Dslreports.com Profile: »profile.antihotmail.com spammers_are_scumbags@antihotmail.com |
