1 edit | New BEFSX41 fimware 1.51.01??
I saw a post earlier about a firmware location on the Linksys FTP site. There appears to be a newer BEFSX41 firmware there too. It is labeled 1.51.01 and is dated September 9th. I got brave and installed it. The router setup page reports it as 1.51.00_hb, Sep 09 2004. You can get it from the link below:

join:2002-10-11 Sandy, UT | It looks like this release has the Heart Beat form of IP connection. That could explain the 1.51.00_hb name. I can't remember if the other 1.51 firmware had that. Other than that, I can't really see too much that's new or different. |

Ok, I have flashed in BEFSX41 firmware 1.51.00_hb. So far so good. I have run quite a few tests already and the router performs as good as 1.51.00. So far, I have not seen any differences between 1.51.00 and 1.51.00_hb. Since this new firmware is descent enough, I will keep one of my BEFSX41 on 1.51.00_hb for now. I will be running few more tests in the following days. If I find anything new, I will reply to this post.
At the mean time, if any of you guys are finding deltas between 1.51.00 and 1.51.00_hb, please let us all know. Thank you in advance. |

somebody said on linksysinfo forums about this "HB" firmwares:
All of those firmware releases (apart from the AG041 code) are specifically for Australian users, more specifically those who use the Telstra cable service - they have modifications to allow them to properly support Telstra's "Heartbeat" authentication protocol. |

Flogator, can you check if you can save the 3DES settings under Advanced VPN Settings using 1.51.00_hb? I'm currently using 1.51.00 in my BEFSX41 and using this release I can not save the 3DES settings. Set setting won't stick. I also have not been able to connect using SSH Sentinel 1.3.2 even when I switch to DES encryption in the router and the client. The diagnostics keeps returning an error related to Phase 2 authentication.
Thanks... |

Flogator, if you would check a couple other things for me...
Are you testing on DSL or Cable? Is the custom/programmable Time Server's in this version?
Any Backup/Restore?
All Filters outbound only?
(P.S. Thanks AliM for info posted before!)

| reply to BlackEyed BlackEyed, thanks for the information. Just check on my router's configuration and do see this "Heart Beat Signal" option for the "Internet Connection Type". That's the first difference I see between 1.51.00 and 1.51.00_hb. I guess this feature is useless in North America. Ah well... If anyone else find other deltas please let us know. |

tamanaco, Yes, I can save 3DES in 1.51.00_hb. Then again, I was able to use 3DES in 1.51.00 as well! I have mentioned earlier that sometimes, in order to be able to set the 3DES settings, you've got to restore the router config to factory default. When I do this, I can set any of the VPN attributes anyway I like.
Just to add to this note, yesterday, I was trying to change one of my VPN tunnels to connect to a different server and was unable to change the remote secure group. After restoring to factory defaults, I could do whatever I wanted. I know it is annoying but at least you can work around it. I am using four BEFSX41 right now. Two of them are on 1.45.7, one on 1.51.00 and the other one on 1.51.00_hb. I use VPN on all four of them and using 3DES with success.
As for the diagnostics in SSH Sentinel, DO NOT RELY ON IT. It reports error mistakenly. The real test is when you are bringing up the tunnel. If that succeeds, then you're in business. Otherwise, you need to dig a little further. I am using SSH Sentinel quite a bit and it is working fine for me. I am assuming that you have read my document carefully, right? |

Jan, other than this heart beat thingy, both 1.51.00 and 1.51.00_hb firmware seems to behave the same. In other words:
- You can configure ONE time server instead of using the defaults.
- The backup and restore feature can be found on the hidden page: "http://192.168.1.1/BackupnRestore.htm"
- Filters are outbound only.
My tests were executed on my cable connection BEFSX41. |

Flogator, I had tried the loooooong reset and setting the router to factory defaults, but I could never get 3DES to stick in the advanced settings using 1.51.00. I finally decised to used DES. Now I'm able to connect and see my computers at home from my job. My remaining question is if there is a way to use the Explorer to view/find the computers in the remote network at home using names. I can only find them using their IP addresses. Do I need to setup a WINS server in the remote network to resolve their names or is there a setting in the router that I need to set? I can find all the computers by name when I'm at home.
Thanks again.. |

| Assuming you've got a BEFSX41 at both end, you need to ensure that the "NetBIOS broadcast" option (located in the advanced dialog of VPN configuration) is enabled on both routers. If you've got that, then you will be able to browse by name. That's how I am setup and it is working fine for me. Then again, the 3DES thingy is working for me too and not for you! Still, you can try that out and report your findings. |

2 edits | Flogator, I have a BEFSX41 at home and a WRT55AG at work. The SX41 has NetBIOS Broadcast enabled. The 55AG does not have the NetBIOS broadcast option, but it has IPSec passthrough enabled. My understanding was that the router with the "client" end-point only requires the IPSec passthrough parameter enabled. The NetBIOS traffic from the Far-End-LAN should broadcast the NetBIOS traffic via the established Tunnel session.
BTW, I have not used a VPN Tunnel Client in a while. In the past when I used "old" VPN client software, the client software created a "virtual" Network VPN adapter that was visible under Network Connections. Using Device Manager one could also adjust the connection settings for this "virtual" adapter. I have noticed that newer VPN client software do not use this "pseudo adapter" approach. I think this is the case with SSH Sentinel. My question then is... Where in Sentinel do I adjust the parameters/filter for the protocols using the Tunnel connection?
As an early adopter I'm always getting burned with new hardware. I was ready to get 55AG and SX41 before they hit the market. I have to learn to wait for a couple months of reviews before I take the plunge. Now it appears that I'm the proud owner of two Linksys duds that get no "official" firmware upgrades.
Thanks again |

| tamanaco, don't lose hopes. I heard from a good source that there will be a new firmware for the BEFSX41 very soon . As for the VPN tunnel, remember that SSH Sentinel does not pass NetBIOS broadcast into its tunnel. This means you will not be able to use host name using NetBIOS with the BEFSX41 and SSH Sentinel combo.
About the settings. I am assuming you will be using the BEFSX41 as the VPN end-point. Then IPSec passthrough should be enabled on the WRT55AG such that you can use a VPN client such as SSH Sentinel on its LAN side. In addition, if the BEFSX41 is running firmware 1.50.7 or above, you will need to enable IPSec passthrough on the BEFSX41 to workaround a bug there. If you are running 1.45.7 and older, you do not need this workaround. |

I have been running this version sing 27/9/04 and I have found it to be stable, I don't use any fancy things like VPN or DDNS but do use UPnP. I have had more success with UPnP under 1.51.01_HB (released initially to Australian users through a local support forum to support Heart Beat signals with Telstra Cable).
Although UPnP works including audio and webcams with MSN Messenger it still does not update the Internet Connection Status (under Windows XP with UPnP enabled). The properties page still shows zero statistics for the Internet Gateway - received and sent.
I hope the new release that flogator has mentioned will support Australian users with the Heartbeat signal and resolve the issues with the connection statistics. |
