Re: choices are many

Do you call Canada?
Do you want to do follow-me, where no answer might ring additional lines?
Do you call Europe much?
Do you have a price range in mind?
Are you concerned about 911 calling?
Do you want an 800# too?
Will you keep your land line?
. . .

You see the two I use in my Sig. They have pros and cons to each.

no
we dont have one ATM, (we just moved) and the phone company keeps screwing us, charging us more money then hook it up in the old house.

I was looking at vonage, they looked pretty good. I am open though.

Re: choice

To give a good answer to your question, it would be helpful to know what you want out of VOIP. What features are you looking for? Is it intended as a replacement for your PSTN (baby bell, Verizon in your area?) phone line? Do you want to port your number? I have personally used Vonage and ATT CallVantage, and I would recommend either (in terms of call quality), if they offer the features you want. I disconnected Vonage because I wanted to LNP my home number, and they couldn't do it. ATT is more expensive ($5/mo difference), but I can port my number, and I can turn call forwarding (specifically, the "Locate Me" feature) on and off via remote telephone call, which Vonage does not allow. [With Vonage, you can only set call forwarding over the web.]

You will likely find plenty of people who will recommend different services (Packet 8, Lingo, QuantumVoice, etc), as well--I won't recommend them only b/c I haven't used them. (Not to mention, there are probably people wondering why I'd recommend ATT or Vonage... ) In any case, I would forward some advice given to me: If you're looking to port your landline phone number to any VOIP service, try the service first with a new phone number, and only port your line if you are satisfied. Most VOIP providers give you a 30 day money-back trial period, and you can port your number afterwards. (Porting your number back or stopping the porting process is not a fun exercise, according to previous posts.) Good luck, and don't feel bashful about trying multiple services--the 30 day trial is there for a reason.

Edit: A friend of mine (who referred me to Vonage) was in your situation. He subscribed after moving here to NC, and he's extremely satisfied with the service. Check out the features each has to offer, and decide from there. Honestly, I'd expect you to be happy with Vonage. FWIW, though, ATT offers outgoing CallerID name with your number, while with Vonage, your number shows up but your name comes up "unknown". Given your answers to USA2K's questions, you'll be happy with either service.

Re: choices are many

I recommend trying a few.
Your Voip is only going to be as good as the weakest part of your connection and there are now many quality voip providers out there.
Try Packet8 of course. At $20.55/month - Great quality, price and free features. You should be able to get a local number and they offer E911 if you want to pay for it.
If you purchase it through Jr.com, you will have it next day with No activation or disconnection charges, 2 months free service, you own the device, and it is free after the rebate. After the 2 month trial you can keep it for $20.55/month or cancel it for no charge. I haven't found a better service or price for voip without the service issues. The service has been down for 10 minutes twice in the last 4 months.
BBR is a great source of voip info. Read the last few weeks of threads here and you will have a good idea of the providers performance. Few threads usually = few problems.

Do you call Canada? (Not VoicePulse)

Do you want to do follow-me, where no answer might ring
additional lines?(BroadVoxDirect, VoicePulse, maybe ATT CV?)

Do you call Europe much? (BroadVoice)

Do you have a price range in mind?(Vonage $25, BroadVoxDirect $19.95, VoicePulse $24.99, Packet8 $19.99, . . . ATT CV $30.)

Are you concerned about 911 calling? (Vonage, Packet8, soon BroadVoxDirect, . . . mixed success from each.)

Do you want an 800# too? (Vonage, QuantumVoice.)

Will you keep your land line? (Sipura SPA3000, and is it Lingo??)

Vonage is promoting referrals by offering 2 months credit now. The new subscriber gets one free month. Note: You can likely get better deals with Vonage at many retail outlets. If they are really your friends, you would redirect them, not refer them.

VoicePulse is waiving the $30 activation for their $25 unlimited 50 State coverage.

Re: choice

vonage is what i was looking at, they sound good. But there are many choices

thanks for the feedback, we dont have a current landline at this house, so 911 (free from vonage) is a must, and getting our old phone number is only a plus.
