Pronto

quote:
"As for SBC, remember Project Pronto? Pronto was a multibillion-dollar broadband buildout, framed with eerily familiar optimism (see 1999 story), but ultimately scrapped due to "regulatory uncertainty".
That makes it sound like Pronto never happened. Pronto caused lots of RTs to be deployed, my home being one of them. It just wasn't completed as planned. Given what happened to the tech economy around that time, it really shouldn't surprise anyone. SBC did use RT deployment as a regulatory playing card a few times (illinois comes to mind) but I can't really blame them for wanting to see a return on a such a big investment.

Okay... so it half happened? That's kinda like being half pregnant.

The original promise for Pronto was for 80% of the SBC customer base to be able to purchase DSL services by the end of 2002. That goal was eventually met this year. The economic downturn, the regulatory environment, and the unanticipated costs of maintaining and operating remote terminals took a toll on the timetable.

Pronto was never scrapped. It limped into completion.
