ADT Security: Response to using of VOIP

I finally received an official response from ADT regarding the use of VOIP:

From R. Goodwin(ADT):

"VoIP isn't suitable for use as an alarm data transmission medium. In fact, most VoIP providers specifically prohibit its use for alarm transmission.

Until such time that a reliable residential IP method is determined, ADT doesn't authorize or permit the use of the internet and/or VoIP for residential.

I never understood why anyone with an alarm system would want to use voip with it in the first place. If you are spending the money on it, you would want it to work 110% of the time.

Some VOIP providers state that they don't support alarm systems. But I have never heard of a VOIP provider that actually prohibits this. ADT's statement could be interpreted as an attempt to shift the responsibility for lack of support onto someone other than themselves.

Some alarm systems do work with some VOIP services. Here's one example: »[Packet8] Home alarm system...

Same response I received over the phone, unfortunately after I installed VoIP.

The whole point of switching from POTS to VoIP for me was to save $40 in taxes and fees....if I add a POTS line just for ADT...there goes the savings....

Its a lot cheaper to ditch ADT and use a different alarm system. I installed a Concord system and use NextAlarm.com for monitoring. Works flawlessly with my Vonage.

In addition, many alarm companies support wireless transmission to their monitoring sites via cellular or other radio transmission. This is even more reliable than being on a POTS line that a burglar could cut the wires to.

I found ADT just a little too set in their ways and dumped them. You don't have to feel locked in unless you signed one of their term contracts. The smaller, more personal alarm companies don't require contracts. Just month to month monitoring fees. I paid a year at once and it works out to $8.95/month with NextAlarm.com.

Hope this is food for thought. There are a lot of alarm systems and alarm companies out there that are a lot easier to deal with.

I have an alarm system through Time Warner and it works great with Vonage. I did have the alarm company come out and help me hook it up correctly. I have had no issues...

What a bunch of morons. Because the system they use is lame and antiquated, VoIP is prohibited? Their eyes are brown !!!! Change ADT, use other company that can handle the new technology.
