Davis, CA having problems?

Anyone with the service in davis having problems. When I first signed up in august it was always maxing out the connection 24/7 now I'm getting this

2004-09-29 04:44:49 EST: 428 / 43
Your download speed : 439102 bps, or 428 kbps.
A 53.6 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 44584 bps, or 43 kbps.

talk about crap. I'm guessing it may have something to do with all the college students moving back into town and now the system may simply be overloaded.

tx power 51.5
rx power -6.4
snr 36.6

is there any use in even calling comcast? During the day the connection times out on google. Only in the middle of the night can I get the speeds I posted above.

I too am having speed issues with Comcast in Davis. Its definitely not the signal strength. Comcast is really messing around with their networks.

Not sure if it is related, but Comcast has been doing "Scheduled Maintenance" for the past week. My connection has never dropped, but it sure slowed down a couple of times in this time frame.

A check of the comcast.net site's Service Center shows more of the same(see pic).

Indeed. I am a new Comcast subscriber and I have noticed a dramatic decrease in the quality of service. Around 11:30 PM last night I did a speed test and had a 114 KB download rate. 30 minutes later it had dropped to 8.8 KB/sec. :-o

Ping times have also increased quite a bit.

edit: I suppose I spoke too soon. Download/upload rates have fallen again.

On another note, are you folks also noticing that it takes about 2 seconds or more between clicking on a link and it actually registering on the server end? The response time was almost instantaneous with my previous ISP, Speakeasy.

Yeah, looks like DNS servers are lagged. Comcast came over and said they are doing maintenence all over the place in davis because they are adding 4 Mbit capability to the original 3 Mbit plan. Not sure if that affects it.

I heard from a tech that someone managed to hack thier system (not thier modem, one of comcast's routers) to remove thier cap, and is using .... bandwidth which is slowing everyone down.

anybody heard any more news on this. The speeds are horrible.

edit: I'm going to call again tomorrow and complain some more. This is ridiculous. Comcast needs to get their act together because I've been noticing problems since around september 10th and its only gotten worse since then.

I've noticed this also. Do you all also have packet loss and poor pings?

I also signed up in August (in Davis) and had great speeds.
For the last week or so I've noticed things getting slower and slower.

This morning speed bounced up to ~2800 a couple of times, but has generally stayed well below 400.

I've spoken with Comcast support, the local office, and 2 techs.
I've been told that somebody is sapping bandwidth, that the influx of students has put an unexpected strain on their new system, and from both techs and phone support that "engineering is working on it" but doesn't expect resolution until next thursday.

I was also given the impression that by the techs that if I scream loud enough they will credit me back some money.
As I have an IP phone that is now essentially worthless, I plan on screaming.

yea im having slow speeds ever since the 29th when i got back from break... this is ridiculous i did speed test and didnt even get 1mbit

@tci.com

The problem is that you have University there & bunch of students are EATING up the bandwidth, Comcast is going to change couple of things on Monday night to help this but at the same time those users that are eating up around 20GB of transfer per week (upstream) will be notified.
Just bare with us. We are working on it.

Set up a network at your home, put one computer on Kazaa or Edonkey or BitTorrent, let it run for a day & make sure you are downloading around 5 files at the same time then while this computer is still running try to use any other PC on the network, I will bank on it that you will have speed problems.
That is what is happening in Davis, you have bunch of dorms, bunch of students downloading movies, mp3s & other stuff & they are eating up the pipe. (not to mention that they are most likely sharing their connection with others in the dorm, wireless)
This kind of problems happen everywhere there are big universities or colleges with dorms.
Comcast is trying to fix this, but one thing I would not do, I would not feed those students any more bandwidth, I would not add more, I would take care of those users that are abusing the service. Plus look at the small print on the work order, you will see that Comcast (or any other company) has the right to terminate your service if they find that you are causing other customers problems by doing things to use up the bandwidth.
This is how it is here in SLC.

comcast doesn't service the dorms. The dorms have resnet and their own cable system.

Well yea. We have alot homework to download you know.

I think many of us switched to comcast with the promise of more bandwidth. This little fiasco is already putting out a lot of bad press about comcast cable. I think it is kind of ridiculous that when they moved here, they did not figure into their equation that students have alot of homework to download. .

If comcast is not going to be faster than dsl, as promised in the many ads I get in my mail box, at least make it work at normal speed instead of giving me hiccups.

it has pretty much boiled down to this. Being a college town their is a large number of late teen early twenties individuals, which is a demographic that is more likely to consume bandwidth for purposes beyond email and checking www.cnn.com twice a day, in my opinion. Thus Comcast overloaded the system.

Sure we'll offer high speed internet just don't use it too much because our system can't handle it. I'm not trying to condone 20gBytes of uploading per week or any other extreme data numbers I'm just baffled that someone over at comcast couldn't have forseen this senario.

latest check at 2:00am gives me 424kbps/99kbps, I eagerly await monday in hopes this can't be solved.

NorthDavis

@67.182.x.x

I came to these forums with the slim hope of finding out what the heck is going on with my internet, Guess i'm not alone.

Just did a speed test - 344/210, out of an advertised 3000/256?

They better get this fixed..

And BTW - Dorms run on ResNet servers, not Comcast. Boy I miss those right now

breag

@comcast.net

The dorms are on resnet, but lots of students do not live in the dorms.
Drive down Covell or F and you'll see all the apartment bldgs with "HIGH SPEED INTERNET" signs.

Regardless, I'm giving them till Friday to clear this up... then I'm switching to SBC DSL.

Man, thanks for this thread, I've been having problems all week. A repair guy was suppose to come out tomorrow, but I'll cancel it now. I was afraid my modem was messed up and they were going to charge me $50 for coming out. The online help people on comcast.net said there are no problems in Davis, I'm glad I'm not alone.

Wow, glad I came here. I just got Comcast last week at my apartment in Davis (Heritage at Russel & Sycamore) and my connection is so crappy! I was in the middle of two outages since then. Speeds are pretty annoying too. I've been getting anywhere between 10kbps to 1000kbps. Right now, it's 24/21. Maybe I should have gotten DSL, but I'm getting a really good deal right now. Sure hope the connection doesn't stay like this.

Resnet in the dorm last year sucked too. Everybody uses P2P too much. The connection was awesome after everybody went home for breaks though.
