So I wander over to Bellsouth's FastAccess page to see if there is anything new, and I notice that (with the 3.0 mb package at least) under the additional options page, that there is a check box for static IP for $0.00
Is this new? |

I wonder how militant Bellsouth is about people running a server on their network. I run my mail\webserver from home...but it doesnt get a lot of traffic. I know port 25 is blocked, but a simple MX record change can take care of that.
Hmm, I wonder if its worth it though. |

1 edit | Running servers on residential accounts is against their AUP. They will throw you off if you are caught, warned and refuse to comply.
Port 25 is blocked in both directions. Changing MX records can't fix that, and I have no idea where you got the idea that it could. |

The AUP forbids servers, so its a moot issue anyway. |

Sure, but what does that accomplish? How does the rest of the world know what port it's listening on?
You can use a port redirection service, but I suspect that since this is still an AUP violation, they might be looking for it and start to filter traffic coming from known redirectors. |

| reply to gojeda Bellsouth was very nice to offer the 3MB package with static ip and all. Since I run my own mail server, I had to leave. I wasn't getting the 3MB down anyways, and lately the connection was really unreliable. The only good thing I got was the static IP. I decided to go with DSLi and I'm quite happy with them. Don't really care much about the 3MB down; even though it's nice to have, but oh well...prefer to have my own mail server. |

| My bosses have 3Mbit from BellSouth at their houses, and it's pretty slow.
You start a download, and are lucky to hit anywhere near 3Mbit at the beginning. It usually decreases a few times while you're on.

| reply to ortuno2k Well the thing is that in this day and age, 1.5 mbit service is getting to be like 28.8kb service back in the day of 56kb service. There is no real reason why DSLi (or anyone else) has to be stuck at 1.5 service. There is no increase in overhead (no new equipment, administration, nothing... As a matter of fact, its one of the sure fire moneymakers left in ISP land. I would be willing to pay more for 3mbit service, and anyone who is starving for more speed would as well.
I could sign up and get 3mbit cable service, but that is only as good as your cable provider is - and mine sucks, not to mention they offer static IP service for added cost.
The search continues.... |

| If you have to have 3.0/384 DSL and want to run servers, look at SnappyDSL. There are probably others too.
However, one thing you need to know, and it may not matter or be important to you, is that anyone doing 3.0/384 DSL as a Bellsouth partner ISP is going to have to do it via PPP on aggregated circuits. There is no bridging or routing on discrete circuits with that service. |

I don't think it makes any practical difference in the end. I know for a fact those folks are complete dicks about this stuff and would instantly terminate anyone they discovered using a method to circumvent their AUP.
Anyone who needs to do this stuff just ought to use a real ISP or bend over and pay Bellsouth what they want to be allowed to do it on their network. |

Dialup ISP mentality with fast pipes. Did I mention they are complete dicks? |

Not to the degree everyone seems to think. The vast majority of available competing small ISPs don't do any advertising so they aren't well known, and there are at least 200 of them.
What is very common, however, is the the failure of most people to shop around or even ask around and just assume Bellsouth is the only provider. |
