| [Packet8] Home alarm system...
Anybody have their home alarm working with Packet8? I did a search and found four topics but no real answers. I have the alarm techs coming out tomorrow to try. They say I am the first in Corpus Christi to try it out. They are as interested as I am. Please let me know. |

Question Will Packet8 work with my alarm system?
Answer It depends on the alarm system if your alarm system needs to make a voice call to notify an alarm company or emergency number of an issue, it will work fine. If your alarm system needs to make a data or modem call, it will not work with the Packet8 service at this time.
FAQ entry here
So if its a voice based system, I see no problems, if it is a modem data based system, more than likely it will not. -- Weather Forums |

| I would recommend to your alarm co that they use silent knight slow format 4+2 10 pps, 20 pps if they can't. Or try SIA format. Contact ID seems to be a NO NO? at this time. P8, is testing fax transmissions. If they hear anything that may sound like a fax whistle I think the DTA switches to 711 and I don't know if this switch over could effect the timing. It is also going to depend on the receiver that your alarm is calling to. If it is an older Keltron it maybe more susceptible to timing issues. If it is a newer DSC you probably will not experience those issues. I know that Napco, DSC, and many other manufacturers have been working on these issues, but there is such a huge miss match in voip suppliers, network issues, and central station receiver setups that the solution for one user may not work well for another. Also, what might work for you right now may not work the same latter down the road. Feel free to IM me. Please post your results for others. |

| reply to macvestor1 I have been using it for several months. I have made three test calls to the alarm company, since P8 was installed.
When first installed, I had to have the alarm tech out. He slowed the modem on the alarm down, and it has worked since that point. We did a test of the time it took to complete the call, in the slowed down mode, the alarm system took 5 seconds longer to complete the call, and transfer the data. |

It is a alarm company local to the DFW area, Smith Tompson. The alarm components are common DSC parts. I am on cable. |

| reply to macvestor1 I kept my pots line for my alarm system. Where I live Charter cable's internet goes down often, so I didn't want to risk having it be down when the alarm was needed. |

| reply to macvestor1 OK.....alarm tech just left. Contact ID does not work at all. They changed the format to 4x2 (that is all the tech stated, I know nothing about alarms) and it works like a champ and is basically 3-5 seconds slower that CID. So now that I know this works I guess that I will port my number over. We have 3 cell phones in our house so it can go down on occasion and not bother us. I love the Packet8 service. |

1 edit | Had an unplanned test of alarm system over Packet8 this morning.
Wife got up and out before I did, motion detector caught me half way to the bathroom.
Outside horn, bells and all worked fine, by the time I got the reset code in, the phone was ringing back from the alarm company and my foggy brain almost forgot the password.
Wife apologized for setting the full alarm while I was still in bed, but we both got a good laugh out of it. |

You can put a TL250 IP communicator on a DSC panel (if your alarm company supports it) and do your monitoring over the data channel without worrying about the voice channel.
The signal arrives in about three seconds. Very nice! |
