Re: [Primus] Cool new ATA

I just ran across a press release from a week and a half ago (below) that indicates Lingo may be rolling out a new ATA in partnership with D-Link: the D-Link DVG-1402S/L. Does anyone have experience with this device? At first blush the new ATA appears to be a fully functional router & firewall, which would be nice since currently I must run my UStar ATA behind my router for a number of reasons. A combined ATA/router/firewall would offer significant advantages.

Information on the DVG-1402S/L is available here: »www.dlink.com/products/?sec=0&pid=361 I haven't had a chance to go over the specs yet.

Primus' Lingo and D-Link Join Forces to Deliver VoIP Solutions to Consumers and Small Business

Global VoIP Service Provider and the Leader in Worldwide Consumer Connectivity

Deliver Advanced Call Services to Retail Locations Nationwide

MCLEAN, Va., and FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Primus Telecommunications, Inc., the originator of the Lingo Internet telephone service, and D-Link(R), the global leader in the design and development of connectivity and communications technologies, today announced a mutual partnership between the two companies to provide Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service and hardware to consumers and small businesses. As pioneers in providing global VoIP service and VoIP hardware manufacturing, the companies will leverage each other's strengths to deliver competitive features and services in support of the Lingo broadband phone service. Available at Fry's Electronics initially, and rolling out to other major retailers nationwide, the new Lingo VoIP telephone service is bundled with the new D-Link Broadband Phone Service VoIP Router (DVG-1402S/L), providing both a high-quality Broadband VoIP telephone adapter as well as fully functioning home router and firewall.

You can buy the D-link on 10/25/04.It is now a few days after and they are saying "Item not in stock".

I wonder how the techs are going to support these when most don't know anything about it.The price from D-link is 99.00. I wonder if they will eventually replace all stock going out with this ATA. Also has QoS...

I ordered service today and I was hoping to get the Dlink, my AT&T Dlink mounts on the wall so I figured the Lingo one did too.

Are they shipping the Dlink or the Starcom?

Does the starcom wall mount?

As far as what is shipping the UTstarcom is the latest.I was told it was being shipped only as of a month ago by a Tier two tech. Was told they were not even informed about the D-Link except that Fry's(The first retail store to get them) would have the unit in the stores by Christmas. This guy said nothing was nailed down about the specifics of and if it would be considered an upgrade for a price or you would have a choice..talked to him this morning after i posted this yesterday.Tier 1 guys don't even know about the UTStarcom yet, well the two that i spoke with about a ticket i have open didn't........

My information is that the UT-Starcom unit has been shipping, as the "standard" Lingo ATA for over a month now. The D-Link is going to be strictly a retail-sale bundled item, as far as I know (although you can buy it on-line through D-Link); the D-Link product and bundling was designed to compete with the Vonage bundling and AT&T CallVantage bundling at retail outlets like Best Buy, Circuit City, Frys, etcetera. I have heard a rumour that they may offer the D-Link to existing customers at an "upgrade" price, but that is STRICTLY a rumour.

The rationale that I was given for moving to the UT-Starcom unit was simply that UT-Starcom would provide better support to Primus/Lingo and more frequent/better firmware upgrades. Functionally, it is the same as the Azacall and uses the same chipset. It was just a matter of Lingo switching suppliers to get better support or perhaps even better pricing; I honestly do not know about the pricing, but you can speculate that price may have been a factor.

FWIW,

Chris R.
