How to do a "/clean" uninstall of Zone Alarm

If any of you have a working link to the "How to do a /clean uninstall of Zone Alarm" instructions would you please post it?

The link I once had to it from Zone Labs seems to no longer work.

MapleLeaf:

Thank you for the link to the previous post. Knew I remembered that from here, too, but couldn't recall it.

Here's my old bookmarked link to the zonelabs site. It used to take the browser to a detailed FAQ that i seem to recall had instructions for removing ZA entries from registry as well (if that memory is correct). Only parts print here - they go to different sites.

Now it goes to the main support page,

but couldn't find the detailed full uninstall FAQ from it. Maybe it is gone, or buried too deep, or this user's error.

Zone Labs periodically "cleans up" forum pages. Unfortunately.

I've had a conversation with ZoneLabs a few times in regards to this very issue. Especially with how they clean out their forum. It really is a pain. When you have what you see as a useful bookmark. But they don't see it that way and kill the thread with their "cleaning house".

The more detailed step by step manual instructions can be found here »ZA Downgrade (98se)

Cudni See Profile gets a big thumbs up in my book for finding the instructions on the ZoneLabs webpage.

My post in that thread includes a helpful Google search. And many previous links / threads in regards to install / uninstall.

In the top 15 results on my page. There are at least 4 links to instructions on different methods to use.

Try this one {from Cudni}: »nh2.nohold.net/noHoldCust25/Prod···nNT.html

Edit: OOPS, IGGY See Profile already referenced Cudni's "find", hehe .. sorry! {I had bookmarked it for reference}

This is what has always worked well for me in the past:

A) Uncheck "Load Zone Alarm (Pro) at startup"
B) Shutdown Zone Alarm.
C) Disable Antivirus Software running in real time.
D) Empty Internet Log directory.
E) Empty Recycle Bin.
F) Reboot.
G) Run Uninstaller from Add/Remove Programs.

DELETE:
1) C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Zone Labs
2) C:\Program Files\Zone Labs
3) C:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs (Empty Contents)
4) C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Zone Labs
5) C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\zonealarm (pro)
6) C:\WINDOWS\System32\vsdata.dll
7) C:\WINDOWS\System32\vsdatant.sys
8) C:\WINDOWS\System32\vsmonapi.dll
9) C:\WINDOWS\System32\vsnetutils.dll
10) C:\WINDOWS\System32\vspubapi.dll
11) C:\WINDOWS\System32\vsutil.dll
12) C:\WINDOWS\System32\Zone Labs
13) C:\WINDOWS\Temp (Empty Contents)

Go into the registry, Find & F3 and DELETE:

14) Zone Alarm
15) ZoneAlarm
16) ZoneAlarm Pro
17) Zone Labs
18) minilog
19) InternetAlert
20) ZAMailSafe and all sub-keys.
21) zapro.exe
22) VSMON
23) VSDATANT

24) Run; ' regedt32 ' give 'Security' permission to 'Everyone' and delete:

HKLM\System\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_VSMON
HKLM\System\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_VSDATANT

25) AND;

HKLM\System\ControlSet002\Enum\Root\LEGACY_VSMON
HKLM\System\ControlSet002\Enum\Root\LEGACY_VSDATANT
---------------------------------------------------------
Verify to ensure the above has removed all these keys from the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Zone Labs

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs\XXXXXX

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\ZoneAlarm Pro

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\vsmon

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\vsdatant

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\minilog

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Zone Labs

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\EventLabels\InternetAlert

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\InternetAlert

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ZAMailSafe
------------------------
Last but not least, delete the hidden license file in C:\WINDOWS\system32 called 'zllictbl.dat '

In my opinion only. The long drawn out instructions are no longer needed. In the past they were only brought forth as a last resort.

The /clean seems to get the job done well. It is also - much easier than having to hunt everything down. I've personally gotten into the habit of backing up my settings. Then doing the /clean method when installing a new build.

This is just my way. Doesn't mean it's the only way. Your mileage may vary.

The poster asked to be provided with how to do a "clean uninstall" or "full uninstall" and no mention about a reinstall, unless I missed something. The problem with too many software makers, and Zone Labs is no exception is that the regular uninstall method leaves behind ghost files and it has been my experience in the past that in the case of ZA it also leaves; enum\Root\LEGACY drivers and the hidden license on the system, hardly a full and clean uninstall.

I'm not sure why the attitude in your post for one. I merely stated my opinion. It wasn't a attack upon your method. As I stated above - I feel the new process of /clean makes the manual hunt and kill method pointless. I think you'll find the machine sufficiently wiped of the software and it's traces using the /clean. As my posted above clearly showed. I listed both methods of removal. So I was in fact aware of what the user was asking for.

And all I'm saying Iggy is that I disagree, in my opinion, your suggested method does not do an adequate job.

I think the "/clean" switch is fine for an upgrade or downgrade {say, going from 4.5 to 5.1, or vice-versa} -- which is what most people do. The other, full instructions, are nice to have too, in case "/clean" fails or in the case one wants to go to a different firewall and completely eradicate all traces of ZA off one's box to avoid conflict.

Thanks again to all of you, Iggy, Randy, and Uriel.

You all provided what was asked. I was looking for links to both types of ZoneAlarm uninstalls. The easy "/clean" and for the "full uninstall" instructions including the registry items to remove which i had used once before in removing all traces of the first version 5.0.

Thanks for going to the trouble to provide both.

Bookmarked 'em and printed them out for future use.

I have used it only on versions 4.5 and 5.1 {the two most popular versions judging from my poll results}. I'm not sure when that switch was introduced but I don't think it works with earlier version like 2.6 for example. ZoneLabs posted their original "full-uninstall" page of instructions during the 2.x version era, I believe. HTH
