Advices For Wifi Newbie?

Hi, I am going to get a notebook PC and a wireless router. I need some advices:

1)What do I need to do to secure my wifi? for security and speed, what wifi option should I go with? B?

2) is their a website that offers complete security instructions?

3)I have desktop PC/Xbox/and will have a Notebook ? how do I connect the pc and xbox to the wireless router?.

4)what brand and model wireless router offers the ease of use/security/and speed reliablity?

5)I read there is a danger with wireless router/cards because of radiation. IS their a way to do deal with this?

6)I have windowsxp(that came with my dell 4550 desktop). I don't want to pay more for winxp with my notebook pc, do you think I'll be able install the xp on the notebook?

7)I have pgp personal disk that I brought from pgp. It requires authorization/activiation for use. Will I be able to use PGP on both Desktop and notebook?

8)and your answers to anything else I need to do to secure my notebook. I use it for everything. It's my cyberoffice/life/etc with $ records/etc. I'll carry it with me everywhere. So I need to secure it. Thanks!

1. I would recommend "G". Speed and security are different things, but G is 54mbps while B is 11mbps.
2. Yes, its called google
3. Depending on the setup and router, some wireless routers have a switch built in for wired connections. For wireless devices, laptops need a wireless card, and devices like an xbox need a wireless to ethernet adapter.
4. Linksys
5. CRT moniters emit radiation. Cell phones emit radiation. Don't worry about it.
6. You can, but it's illegal.
7. Can't answer that, dunno.
8. Wireless encryption (see maunals), and the obvious firewalls. You could also use monitering apps like Snort to see who is on your wireless network. (ID'ed by MAC address)

A GENERAL TIP: Don't use any other devices that use the same frequrncy of your wireless routers. (IE: 2.4 ghz phone and a 2.4ghz router)

Another thing, me thinks only half of these questions are on the right board.

Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has them, and most are full of shit. (overused, but funny nonetheless)
