Re: My FIOS install

I did the house myself with the master faceplate in the garage. It is nothing more than a crossconnect point where every room has cat5 connections. It was basically overkill on my part. The crossconnect allowed me to move to a room over to a LAN port instead of a wireless one. That way I could use my laptop to play game if I needed a more dedicated connection than say wireless which I use when surfing on the net. The kids regularly kick me off of my computers. Gotta love it.

The single ethernet jack is what they installed and I just patched it over to the router. I live alone, except for when the kids come over and the kids pc's are hooked up via wireless. The UPS is just for the phone and only for the phone.

The two installers were sharp for sure.

Can you tell me how this speed test site identifies your connection?

Just to note: That speed test site isn't good for connections over 3Mbps - it doesn't even register good speeds with my OOL Connection.

Here are the results of the test:

TCP/Web100 Network Diagnostic Tool v5.2.1e
click START to begin
Checking for Middleboxes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Done
running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 1.51Mb/s
running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 15.06Mb/s
The slowest link in the end-to-end path is a 10 Mbps Ethernet subnet
Information: Other network traffic is congesting the link

click START to re-test

bw = 121.57 based on packet size = 11Kbits, RTT = 91.11msec, and loss = 1.0E-6
The theoretical network limit is 121.57 Mbps
The transmit buffer (127.0 KByte) limits the application to 10.97 Mbps
Your receive buffer (249.0 KByte) limits the application to 21.39 Mbps
The network based flow control limits the application to 14.83 Mbps

Client Data reports link is 'Ethernet', Client Acks report link is 'Ethernet'
Server Data reports link is 'Ethernet', Server Acks report link is 'T3'

The only thing I can tell you, is that this connection is much more stable as far as ping goes and time to my favorite game server. There is almost no fluctuation when i do a ping 50 times on it. I was with Charter and it would vary wildly.

I was not joking when I said it was hard to find a decent test spot for this connection. I mean it. Half of them outright state that they are inaccurate for speeds over 5 or 8Mbps.

Any lists of decent test spots for this kind of connection?

Thanks, all I can say is.. Impressive, wonder how it will be when they get 20,000+ customers hooked to that, hope they use a backbone big enough to support the bandwidth of leeches.

also, how much faster does browsing feel? like a whole lot faster or just a slight bit faster?

The best method for measuring speed-test is using FTP transfers; The best place for to measure your downstream channel is using the OOL FTP Speed-test, after 30-45 seconds, note your transfer rate and cancel your download; then take the transfer rate value by 8.192 and you should get your true downstream channel in kbps(kilobits per second).

OK - Well, with my 10Mbps connection from OOL, it usually takes just about 1 min to download it - it may be best to get the value at 50% then.

1.76 MB/sec = 14,417kbps

That's about 96.11% of your rated downstream channel; The TCP/IP overhead is taking up just about 4% of the line - looks pretty good though.

Tom, I've got to agree with the consensus here, I hate you as well

Wonderful photos! Enjoy!

Thanks for posting this, gives me some hope that I won't have to put up with the MSOs and their silly restrictions in a couple of years. And if not, we're all moving to Keller!

Regards, you lucky son of a gun!

The hardest part of that line is finding sites that support that fast download speed. lol

Here i am spending $150 a month for ISDN in the boonies

I need that connection for newsgroups. BTW... I know that site i gave for the test isn't the best... I was just curious as to how it would interpret what kind of connection you have...

To those wondering if verizons network will be able to handle all of the bandwidth they are giving users and if it will be able to handle it once more people get online, it can. The fiber lines going to the house are capable of 155mbp/sec with the current line card and can be upgraded in the future. Those splice into a bigger line with 655mbp/sec of bandwidth that can also be upgraded for more bandwidth in the future. The only way that verizons network would get bogged down would be verizon not maintaining a link capable of those speeds to the internet backbone which is not likely.
