Read the threads you'll see what users are using there connections for. You'll also see very good reasoning for needing more upload speed. For legitimate purposes.
As to there is always dial-up. Oh my - get over it. I guess it's ok for ISP to screw over there customers. Overcharge while providing less than the competition does for less money. All because we should be grateful that we have the choice of broadband? I think not. Every ISP except for Comcast, have raised the bar in terms of speed recently ( finally ). Even DSL providers are competing now. This is a major reason your finally seeing cable ISP get off there backside. Time Warner has had 384 up for there standard tier for years. Lets not even start talking OOL or @Home before they went speed cap happy. And if you compare US providers against Canadian or Asian providers. Our country is really starting to lag behind in terms of broadband technology.
Since Insight and Comcast have a financial relationship. It's not surprising that Insight would follow the Comcast tier pattern. They also have an agreement with Time Warner in the Columbus, Ohio area.
I personally feel the new standard tier should be 4000/384. They could offer lower tiers at lower pricing. Like SBC and other providers have done. SBC really takes you to the cleaners with there lower tiers and pricing though. They could of course offer higher tiers above the standard - as they do now. Current 3000/384 users pay $79.95 a month - $69.95 a month if you own your own modem and have a certain tier of cable tv. Granted you can get broadband from Insight without being a cable tv subscriber - a plus for cable operators who do this. DSL is starting to learn.
Insight supposedly will raise speeds to 6000/512 in October for us current 3000/384 subscribers. Meaning that we will be paying an extra $35.00 a month for just 128 up more, for 1 month until the rumored upgraded for the higher tier. Every other ISP normally releases all new tiers at once. So as to not rip customers off. Like Insight is planning on doing. Not the first time. Read the history in regards to this in the forum. Covington, KY users have seen 4000/256 for months now. Insight states it was a test area. BS - read the history of how that area has always gotten the better speeds and pricing. Compared to every other Insight area.
On the plus side. There has been no indication that prices for broadband service will increase with this coming upgrade. Insight is very stable for almost all of us. Hardly any downtime since they took over from @Home.
If they would go 6000/768 for the high tier. Since this is the highest SBC offers in my area. I'd be a little bit more jazzed about the coming upgrade. If they would in fact release the 3000/384 customers upgrade when they do the standard tier upgrade next week. I'd be a lot happier customer as well. I some times wonder were there managers and marketers went to school. They don't seem to know how to keep there best customers happy.
Granted there may be a technical or equipment related issue. That could be the reason for not doing both upgrades at the same time. Maybe they want to make sure the network can handle the increased speeds etc. But from a customer perspective. There current plan just stinks.
Granted a 4000/384 config is on the network. So maybe 3000/384 customers will see that for a month. Yet we'll still be paying a $35 premium for only an extra 128 up.
Thanks for the front page news on this though. Maybe one day Insight will buy a clue. And start doing official support in our forum. Not forcing there employees to risk losing there job for trying to help out. Thanks to those that do. Even though we may not all agree with you at times.:)
P.S. - the 2700 thing has been explained. DOCSIS and overhead. Previous threads pointed this out. Thus the reason Comcast does there 4000/256 tier as 4.3/256. Real world download test support this.
This is a trust worthy source and confirms my fears.

"I got the memo in my mailbox today that said 4000/256 for 44.95 and 4000/384 for 79.95 as of sept. 1st. I think it is a copy of what will be going out to customers but I am not totally sure."

| It would seem that 6000/512 or maybe even 6000/768 is around the bend for current 3000/384 users. Again this is just information being passed around. But it would seem that 6000/512 has been confirmed once again. And there may be a user beta test before October. Well see very soon from what I've recently seen hinted at. And I've seen confirmation ( again ) of no price increase for either upgrade. Which is a very big plus.

| Thanks for the update IGGY...I'll be very happy to keep paying an extra $35 for the 6000/(512/768). I just hope they don't drag their feet on implementing it.

I'd pay an additional $15 for 6000/512 or an extra $20 for 6000/768. Beyond that, and bandwidth becomes an excessive cost. |
