1 edit | Firewall settings may interfere with WU V5
I was trying to get Windows Update V5 to scan my PC for available updates, and found that I kept getting a 0x80072ee2 error, which usually means that the control has been unable to contact the WU site. I tried all of the suggested fixes Microsoft had (use HTTP 1.1 through proxy settings, check the hosts file, flush DNS and so on), to no avail. Then I took a look at my Sygate Pro traffic logs. It was blocking remote SSL (TCP 443), which the V5 WU uses. I created an advanced rule:
Allow SSL to/from 207.46.0.0-207.46.255.255 (Microsoft's entire IP range).
Windows update seems to use a slightly different address for SSL transactions each time, and this is what I think is causing the problem.
Edit: I had one of my svchost.exe processes blocked in Sygate Pro due to Blaster/Welchia/Sasser worms. Allowing SSL traffic to Microsoft fixed the problem. -- "Kayura or Badamon, whichever you are, you should know that I will never give up this battle.
