can a couple of you with 10up/10down give me an idea of what your actual speeds are and how consistent they are? I'm thinking of moving and may try the wireless. Thanks. |

| reply to tim006 After using it for a couple of months now my speeds vary depending on the time of day, how much other traffic is going on (it's shared bandwidth as you may already know).
I'm thinking about going VOIP and it's kind of a pain to figure out how much bandwidth I should give (using QOS) to my voice connection as it changes daily. Anyone have any ideas, let me know.
Here are some speed test numbers if you are interested.

1 edit | reply to tim006 That's nowhere near 10,000! hehe. What if you were right under a tower? would it be faster? Do you think the bandwidth is just crowded? I have to face the fact that wireless could be the only thing available. Just trying to find the sweet spot before hand. Timber Trails is new sub division north of 72? Do you know the name of the subdivision S of 72, on tyler rd? --

| Timber Trails is north of Big Timber, west of Tyrell Rd, south of 90 and 72.
I'm a few miles (2-3) from the tower according the map that the install tech was looking at on his laptop when they did the install a few months back.
There are other DLS.net wireless users on this board and one of them lives on the east side of Carpentersville. He is within site of the tower and gets 7-8 megabit up/down.
As you can see the speed depends on how close you are to a tower and if you are in line of sight.
Remember too that DLS.net only guarantees 256kbps up and down. That is a far cry from the max of 10/10 megabit up/down. But, compared to the alternatives out there right now, what else is going to give you (in my case) ~2 megabit up/down for $65/month? Not DSL or cable. It's just not available. Not now at least, in our subdivision. |
