| [XP Pro] Windows Update v5 hangs at start?
Ok.. I've been having this problem for two days now, which is BEFORE I installed SP2 (I installed that today.) Surprisingly, installing SP2 did nothing to fix the problem, either.
Windows Update v5 is just hanging at startup. It says the usual
"Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software..."
and just sits there.
I have tried:
1. Reinstalling the scripting engine
2. Deleting c:\progra~1\Windows Update
3. Deleting c:\\system32\wuweb.dll and the windows update control under Downloaded Program Files
4. Re-registering wuapi.dll and others
5. Resetting the IE security level
6. Clearing temporary internet files, etc..
Still no dice. I don't have any popup blockers installed, nor do I have ZoneAlarm or anything similar installed - I know that caused problems like this in the past.
The only possible relatable that I'm running is NAV 2003, but I've been running that since.. well.. 2003. V5 worked fine last week, and seemed to die after the last update I did with it (I dont remember which one it was!)
Any advice? |

| Oh. Also tried deleting the catroot2 dir, resetting the wuserv security descriptor, and restarting cryptographic services, BITS, and the automatic update service.
I dont get it!
It's like IE is just not installing the activex control for WU -- or not even trying to.. |

| reply to tcp1 hey, do you have any idea why I can't even go to the V5 Site? I installed the stuff for v5 4 or 5 days ago, and the day I installed it, it worked fine(I mean I could go to the page) But the next day I couldn't.. and even after installing SP2 it still won't let me go to it. I can type the V5 page in manually and it takes me to the V4 page. Is there anything that I can do that will uninstall everything that has to do with WU so I can start over? Cause something is messed up. I read that SP2 will ONLY use the new V5 site, and if that is true... I won't even be able to get updates.. I have been trying to get an answer for 3 days now and havn't figured it out. As far as deleting WU, someone told me to go to my computer, c:/, program files, windowsupdate... and told me to delete whatever folder was in there... V4 OR v5... V4 was in there. I deleted it and then went to WU again and it took me to the V4 page again. Do you have any idea as to what I can do to fix this?? I would appreciate your response.. Thanx |

| I had the same da-- problem and found in my windows update log this:
2004-08-26 19:04:32-0500 2992 ba4 CreateObject for Microsoft.Update.AutoUpdate failed: error 0x800401f3 2004-08-26 19:04:32-0500 2992 ba4 CreateObject for Microsoft.Update.SystemInfo failed: error 0x800401f3
I clicked on START and then RUN put in each line seen below and clicked on OK.
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuapi.dll REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\atl.dll REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wucltui.dll REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wups.dll
ONE LINE AT A TIME >
then re-ran windows update within IE and all was fixed. This problem DOES NOT exist if you have your computer set to AUTOMATIC UPDATES.

| This sure worked for me. Thanks a lot TCP1. Been on this for the past day. The easier thing to do would be to create a file called foo.bat and paste all the lines into it. Then run foo.bat from a cmd prompt of the Start->Run box. You still have to hit OK on every dialog.

| hello all, I am using winxp HOME with sp2 installed and all previous critical updates. However, i get the same hang-time as the original poster when trying to determine if there are more updates for windows. I am using ie.6 exclusively for updating my os but sometimes the page does not respond, just hands with the progress bar, and sometimes it give me this:
Error number: 0x80072EE2.
i have placed the suggested sites in my security settings as per the instructions from windows update troubleshooting, and i have enabled HTTP 1.1 through proxy but i dont use a proxy, just sygate home firewall 5.5, tds3, and avast, and I have turned off the popup blocker in ie. I have tried to load the mentioned dll s, but i get this:
LoadLibrary("C:\WINDOWS\system32\wups.dll") failed - The specified module could not be found.
for EACH dll entry.
I have windows update, bits, and event log services set to automatic as suggested and still no go. any help is greatly appreciated and i will chant a sutra in your honor:D |

1 edit | shizukasa , if you do a "search" of your system for the file "wups.dll", does anything come up?
Also if you take a look at your Windows Update log (look for "Windows Update" in C:\Windows and click on it to open with Notepad) are there any entries with an error, and what is the error code(s). Any reference to a problem with wups.dll?
Did the other files register OK?
Also, try setting the BITS service to "manual" rather then "automatic", as the "automatic" setting for this service has caused problems for some users.
And, since you are using Sygate, and if you haven't already, try disabling XP's built-in firewall. |

| @auggy ok found the "wups.dll" in system32 folder and also the rest of the mentioned dlls "wuapi.dll, wuaueng.dll, atl.dll, wucltui.dll"
the other files did not register either when typed in Start/Run
i found no error entries in the Windows Update log but i do notice this:
notice is reads as v4, whereas when i go to the Windows Update site, it clearly says- v5, attached is the log for Windows Update.
I have disabled windows firewall. Are there any other services i should be running that would compromise updates. I run a pretty tight ship so i have disabled most unnecessary services that would enable filesharing and the like. I will try setting Background Intelligent Transfer to manual.
Thanks for reply |
