You must not download music then! If AOL charged you $49.95 for dialup, you would probably think you're ripping THEM off!

Umm, no. So this must mean that you're downloading ~500 GB per month? That's a hell of a lot of music. Cable company says, "Gee, lets double our download speeds so our customers can download a terabyte a month, but of course we'll have to enforce our secret download cap".

You think that Thousand Oaks is "da hood"?

Anyways, the distance barrier for DSL is the only thing still allowing cable companies to gouge their customers in the wallet.

"4,5 and even 10Mbps are becoming increasingly common in North America."

4000 and 5000 Ok I can see that now. If and when many of the ISP who are announcing speed upgrades. Do so for all of there customer base. Not just a select few. But very few see the 10000 down or the 1000 up that OOL provides and @Home used to deliver.

My ISP used to a leader when others were at 1500 they kept us at 3000. But there supposed answer to the latest cable and DSL upgrades is to maybe give us Comcast speeds of 4000/256. This is rumored. I'll believe it when I see it. Comcast does have a 50% stake in my ISP - Insight. There current packages are 3000/128 for $34.95 if you have there cable and your own modem. Same requirements gets you 3000/384 for $69.95 a month. There is no current information on what they would give the 3000/384 tier users ( I'm one of them ) when they upgrade to the 4000/256 as there main package offering. No one seems to ever be able to get leaked press from them here anymore.

I'd say the 9th largest cable company in the US. Definitely doesn't meet with the statement I quoted above.

...As long as you live within 6,000' of an RT/CO for DSL.
....which is the major majority of DSL customers that live in "Da Hood". Yep, Thousand Oaks..I.E. Ventura County in my book...
Enjoy the smog,, traffic, Gangbangers baby!!!!. I love watch'in KTLA in the morning with the traffic reports-or streaming KFI on the 'net w/their traffic reports. Yeah..I wanna move to "Thousand Oaks", so I can get your DSL speeds..
Gawd...
But..when you 'come up for air' in S.L.O. County, we have 3 simple rules:
1) Enjoy your stay.
2)Spend LOTS of $$$.
3)then.. GO HOME!!!!
...and drive safely...CHP patrols BIG TIME in S.L.O., Santa Barbara County...
What a Moron....and for those of you that are reading this, here's an approximate of population:
County of San Luis Obispo: 275,000 Souls.
Thoudand Oaks: Population (year 2000): 117,005, Est. population in July 2002: 122,700 (+4.9% change)
Males: 57,440 (49.1%), Females: 59,565 (50.9%)

I get 3Mb/s down. I can't imagine having to use any more than that. Cable providers continue to raise d/l speeds, but what customers really want is raises in upload speeds.

More would be nice, but is by no means necessary. Rarely do I fully utilize my 3Mbps download, except on large files. With the bit of gaming I do, I'd rather have a bit lower download with decent pings than extremely fast download with high pings.

Someone else said it here that Comcast needs to offer lower tier speeds. I agree with that. If they offered 2.0/256 for $30 a month, I'd probably jump on it.

Well my point is that it would appear the cable companies are pulling the wool over the eyes of its' basic customer base in that they are offering more download speed for a slightly greater price, but have yet to offer more upload speed, less download for cheaper. I suppose one could also argue that the "basic user" would have no need for increased upload speeds.

Regardless, I'm happy with my 3000/768 plan for $44.95/month which I feel is a great deal.

Not to be upstaged by Time Warner Cable's 6Mbps tier, Comcast quickly issued a press release announcing a 4Mbps tier
Unfortunately they called it a new tier... not an upgrade, which probably means that it will cost more.
So instead of more for nothing... comcast is more for something.

I agree somewhat raised or not I would like to see lower priced tiers and the ability to use some of the upload responsibly, though I am convinced the latter will never happen.

Atleast Comcast responded that ALL of their markets would be upgraded by September. ALL of their markets being the key word.
