1 edit | reply to BBR_InsUW Edward, once again you engage in wishful thinking. You have no idea how many Cox people I've spoken with, in one form or another, in the past 24 hours - FOR NOTHING!
The Cox people here, who have chosen to respond, have been kind, and sound understanding, but no one can or will break the wall of silence to let us believe anything positive about a company that just proved how worthless we are to them.
All of the empty promises "we're working on it" now appear to be lies. Put yourself in our shoes - what would you think?
I have two steps left to take, which I have begun this morning. First, the local news media needs to be in on this, and I have begun to make those calls, since Cox is unwilling to work out any solution to our situation. Second, I have offers stacking up for satellite TV, and they're pretty good offers. I understand there may be some inconvenience in switching, but I don't want to do business with Cox any more, because I don't like doing business with people I can't trust - and right now Cox's credibility is absolute zero. SBC is doing DSL work in NW Arkansas, and DSL availability is only a matter of time. I'll vote with my wallet, and take my $100/month elsewhere, thank you.
It's not about the speed, it's about the trust. And no, I don't think anyone from Cox will read this, and if they did I don't believe they will care, and if they do I don't believe they will be able or willing to say or do anything about it.
On the off chance I'm wrong, somebody have Steve Gorman return my call. In the mean time, I'll be out telling everyone I can find to stay away from Cox.
(On a side note - it appears that El Dorado, Arkansas, which is on M.A.C., did receive an upgrade over the weekend. No one seems to know why, since M.A.C. "can't be upgraded for technical reasons.") -- On August 9, 2004 Cox Communications upgraded 3000/256 areas to 4500/500. "Middle America Cox" is still running at 1024/128, for the same fee as the faster areas. Cox officials refuse to announce intentions to upgrade, saying only "we're working on it." |

| I am an IT guy for a court reporting firm. We have court reporters in Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana. When it comes time to get the high speed internet (which is a requirement for the job, uploading and downloading from my company FTP server...) I tell them to STAY AWAY FROM COX. I have several court reporters in MAC areas, and they are the ones I warn. Luckily, they were mostly able to get DSL, and are thrilled with it. Now, if they were in an HSI area, I could encourage them to get Cox. I'm very happy with my service. I just don't think it's ethical what Cox is doing for the MAC crowd. -- HyperJoe 2004 |

| reply to dg2 If you MAC people really care, you should be doing what dg2 is doing. GO TO THE MEDIA. MAKE IT KNOWN what Cox is doing in MAC. Cox does NOT like bad press. MAKE IT KNOWN TO YOUR COMMUNITY THAT THEY ARE BEING RIPPED OFF. All this complaining is for naught if you don't do something about it. Cheers, dg2. I hope you stop at nothing making sure your community is aware of the butt reaming they are getting. -- HyperJoe 2004 |

| reply to BBR_InsUW We didn't get the upgrade, we got the shaft. Been there done that. I didn't really expect any speed anyway, just a price increase. I hope you are listening Cox. I am not a happy customer. -- "Don't steal. The government hates competition." |

| And yet, your review are both glowing...
I decided to update mine yesterday. It hasn't glowed in a long time - now it's not even reflecting any light at all. I just wish they had a button for zero. |

1 edit | reply to BBR_InsUW Good thing I'm moving . . .
I was a Cox customer back in 2002 or so for almost a year before I moved to Dallas from Longview, Texas. The service was pretty good, especially since it was (back then) on par with the rest of the country, or so it seemed as I was new to broadband. I moved to Dallas, subscribed to SBC DSL 'cause that's what was available in the area and WOW! I was MUCH more impressed with the speeds, TWICE what I was getting with cox and at the same price! Well, I was struck with ill-luck and had to move back to the east Texas area and now back with cox. What a downgrade =( Here I was spoiled with fast AND affordable DSL service in Dallas to only be greeted with crappy 1024/128 when I moved back to the sticks. Yeah, it's better than dial-up, but the more you know, the more you realize you're gettin' shafted if you live in the MAC area. It's a monopoly plain and simple. COX knows there is no competition in my area and really no other service other than dial-up so I guess they think we can huff and puff but never blow their house down 'cause 1024/128 IS better than dial-up . . . yeah . . . So I join the ranks of the pissed off and feel EXCITED for those who got the upgrade, but COX still has a negative mark in my book for treatment of us in the MAC area. Get with the program COX, can't half-ass your attempts to satisfy demand . . . ALL OR NOTHING!!!! -- ~Deep~ |

Not quite - you're still running at 3000/256, right? Let me see if we can get that turned down for you... |

Just to confirm that we do have some high level folks watching this thread and your comments. As the press release said, there will be more announcements later this year.

1 edit | So, Jim, why don't you come out here to Arkansas, and explain to us first-hand why things are this way? Or better yet, send out Steve Gorman or Joe Rooney. While they're out here, maybe they can explain to the local office tech staff why "there were no upgrades" to the Cox network over the weekend?
We've been hearing "not today" so long that it is no longer believable, and upgrading everyone else while MAC is still running at 1024 max. was an inconceivable act of arrogance on Cox's part. Announcements later this year don't do us any good. Announcements after we unsubscribe are useless. Stunts like this make it appear that the promise of future announcements is just to string us along, taking our $40 per month for 1/4 the service.
Specifics would be welcome. Action would be acceptable. And with all due respect sir, you cannot begin to understand my level of frustration. I'd be happy to explain it to you, or Joe, or Steve - just call me, and I promise I'll be much nicer than I think Cox deserves. -- On August 9, 2004 Cox Communications upgraded 3000/256 areas to 4500/500. Your CSR here in LV said that I can get those speeds with the Business Plan. So that tells me that the infrastructure is in place. So, why was LV left out in the upgrade? -- Ninety percent of the game is half mental. Yogi Berra |

| OK, so Cox HSI goes down for an hour today and I hoped it would snap back and hand me the speeds some of y'all now get.
Nope, just 2.0/400 - on 98se and XP boxes. I called and was told you should have it etc. Umm, so, where is it?
Not here, thats for sure.
( And, oh yeah, I was told that Cox Business will have new plans next week, but dont bother. Their signal travels along the same plant and wire you already have.) |

3 edits | reply to BBR_InsUW I guess I was supposed to get upgraded, but what happened instead is my upload got upgraded from 256 to 512 (almost) but my 3200 download got slashed in half to 1700. Downloads are down from 300~ to 150~
Now if it gets fixed to 4000/512 then Cox will finally be competitive with CableAmerica, our "other" local provider and QWest (assuming you can get their DSL in your area). 'bout friggin time. |
