If that is the case then why aren't the companies saying so? Are they embarrassed? Are they shutting down for another reason?

Face it. The interference was there. No denying it.

Add, to that, the financial costs associated with deploying it to all those rural customers they promised to serve.

Doesn't change the fact it was a bad idea to begin with.
