Useful idea: local gateway #s for Vonage et al.

Vonage already has local voicemail dialup numbers in the area codes it covers. Why not expand those numbers to act as local gateways for calls to Vonage customers? Somebody in area code XXX dials a local gateway, then keys in the 10 digit number of the Vonage customer he wishes to reach, and it rings through. Would seem to be a nice selling point for VOIP services to be able to offer all your frequent callers (family, etc.) the ability to call you from anywhere in North America as a local call.

Maybe they could find a financial incentive by selling it as a virtual access portal to customers that want it for $5.00 a month (and likely a $1.50 regulation recovery fee ) Those who don't subscribe won't be routed.

Here is a tip:

You can dial a local access number that gives access to FWD (such as the numbers in Michigan and from www.notaduck.com). Then, enter **243 + 1 + Vonage number. You can then call Vonage numbers from various local areas.

You can also register a new FWD account and forward it to a Vonage account. Then when people call the number they only have to enter a 6 digit number instead of 16.

How do you forward a FWD number to a Vonage number? I have a FWD account but don't see that option.

Login, go down to permanent forwarding number. Set the URI to:

sip:**243+1Vonage@fwd.pulver.com

Replace "Vonage" with your Vonage number, of course.

Wow! I thought they never got that going but my FWD ATA 186 was able to call Vonage
(Also ATA 186)

The Cisco never worked that well before? But Vonage and FWD are not behind NAT at the moment. That may have been the difference. I could never dial FWD to FWD on the same TA, but that also worked

Fascinating. Is there a list anywhere of all local FWD numbers?

The voicemail dialup numbers are not necessarily local for people. In some area codes, they are local, but since there is only 1 per area code, in most they are not local.

Customers that want a service like that should order a Toll Free Plus number.

Otherwise, just use Click2Call on your website to have people call you (only according to Vonage you are calling them, but watch your minutes if you do not have an unlimited plan and it won't work if you do not answer the phone). Code to do it is provided here:

I would actually make a few modification to the PHP code before actually using it though. People can enter arbitrary numbers including international numbers (if international dialing is enabled on your account). Unless it is password protected, this is not to mention an open invitation for people to abuse the system, eat up your minutes, and keep your phone busy.

I hope to modify the PHP code soon to password protect it, remember default numbers for people, and to check the numbers to make sure that paid services like 900 numbers and international numbers are not called. It will use either a flat file or MySQL database to store the information. At that time, I will make it available.

Oooo. I didn't know you could use c-2-c that way. Very cool!
