7Mbs, 10Mbs? That's nothing, Verizons NEW Fios (FTTP) service here in the USA will soon go as high as 30Mbs/5Mbs($199.95 per month), As soon as the Fall of 2004 I hear, 15Mbs/2Mbs service is scheduled to be at $49.95 and 5Mbs/2Mbs service is scheduled at $39.95 per month. And Yeah I qualify....

Re: Better hold on...

hehehhe....Verizon always promises great things and then drags their feet...we will see if they can dleiver 30MBps...in 2004...anyone want to bet that they will compete with their own T3 and T1 services in order to offer these speeds to a resi customer?

Then again, competition could be waking their monopoly @sses up!

Well they are the Only Telco so far to spend lots of cash(Billions) on internet access. Of course with Fiber They can have TV too. Talk about a possible triple threat.

Think again. This means lot's of those big telco pipes prices will be dropping. Wouldn't it be nice to have a t3 for your business at 2,000 instead of 15,000. Will be a fun next 4 to 5 years in verizon country.

How fast can you get though? Why do we need to go so fast. After about 1mbps everything is just about instant. It's nice to see technology increasing, but I feel once you get past a certain point there's really no need to increase speeds. They should work on things such as line qualities, and the phone companies with distance to the CO issues. DSL has only one problem, and that's availability.

You know it's post like this that just really make stupid ISP managers think. They say why should we output the cost of a network when the majority of clueless users are happy with what we give them now.

By your thought standards. We should all still be using an Apple II E for a PC or would that maybe be a Tandy? And driving model Ts for cars.

I guess it's ok for the supposedly most technologically advanced nation in the world. To be dragging behind ever similar nation in regards to broadband. We used to be a country of innovation and first. Now we are just becoming a nation of = It can't be done - it's not possible - why should we do that. We need to innovate to stay ahead.

Whatever man, with my DSL at 1.5/256 I do all that just fine. It only took me 15 minutes yesterday to download 19 songs and make a CD for a friend. I run a server, an internet radio station with ease, Basic Web Surfing is a synch, I host my own website, we have our own station email, anyone can use Instant Message even if you have dial-up, the kids research school work with ease, I do my work from here with ease. I am viewing the highest possible video clips with no problem.

Don't EVER insult some one's intelligence, I'm just trying to prove a point and express my opinion! And I am BY FAR not clueless, I know broadband. I'm just saying, after a certain point, everything is just about instantaneous! Sure 10mbps would be nice but I feel the companies should improve things such as line qualities and server overloads and availability issues. Then explore new possibilities.

15 minutes to make a CD...that means download and burn buddy, please read and think before ya post ! takes twice as long to find the music and download it then burn it than it does to download. It only takes about 1.5 seconds for me to download a 4 minute song.

I've currently got fiber to my home as part of a municipal fiber project in Provo, Utah. 5mb/sec up and down for $35/mo. Able to go much higher if desired at reasonable costs.

I'd say in the next 10 years, if not sooner, the phone CO's will switch over to all fiber. Look what cable is trying to do, VOIP now. Trying to take customers from the bells. Well in token (and I spoke with a tech. on this that came out to my house because I was having phone trouble) the bells will offer TV over their fiber to compete. Should be an interesting battle. First DSL VS. Cable, now this. Since the phone will have the capability as the cable and the cable will have the capability of the phone, one will fall. And if Cable doesn't lower their rates, I predict they will fall.

4 minute song in 1.5 seconds? Either you are lying or you are clueless. A 4 minute songs, even just a 128 kbit/sec is about 4 MB big. If you claim to have 1.5 Mbit/sec down, it would take you at least 22 seconds to download, assuming there is no connection overhead. In reality, it would take at least 30 seconds.

Also, at your 256 kbbit/sec upload, you couldn't use VoIP, host a server and play an online game all at the same time. I just uploaded 80 MB in digitial photos to Kodak. Even on 600kbit/sec upload it took forever. 1 mbit/sec is not nearly instant. And future households will feature more VoIP, video conferencing, online gaming etc. 1 mbit/sec may be good enough for you, but plenty of people want more than that. And what's this talk about improving line quality? They have to lay down a new connection to improve your line quality. Offering faster internet usually just requires some central equipment to be upgraded.

You know, it all depends on the person you're downloading from too. I bet their upstream isn't more than 384kbps, most residential broadband users are capped at 128k or 256k. So how the f@#$ am I going to download it at 1.5mbps, therefore 1.5 will be just as good as 3.0 when downloading music from p2p. I'm not clueless. I know what the hell I'm talking about, 4 minute song can very well be downloaded in a second and a half. I never said the song was 128k....ever hear of mp3pro? Songs that are 64k are still as good as 128k, and smaller. You get decent sound with even a 32k (FM Quality) mp3 pro file.

My burner is a bit slow and sometimes it's hard to find songs, but that has nothing to do with the DSL. Thus causing the process to take longer. Plus I throw all my music in the editing program to make sure there's no delay, and that the song starts as soon as the track begins (call me a perfectionist but I'm a DJ). Then I must run the songs through volume leveling.

And did I say I was hosting a large server? no. Mine are transmitted to a larger server. I run an Internet Radio Station at 32k, I can have as many listeners as I want because it shoots to the Live365 server. The email server goes through our web hosting. I run a small server that is transmitted to a larger server. So the short answer would be yes, I am running servers.

And for general websurfing...most people I talk to feel 1.5 is instant.
