 Airport - no bars

I have recently installed a Netgear DG834G. It works fine connected to a PC via an Ethernet cable. However, I also want to be able to connect to it wirelessly via the Mac G4 in the next room. I have installed an Airport card in the G4, but it does not seem to pick up any signal at all from the router - there are no bars on the Airport symbol on the Mac.

WEP on the Netgear is disabled. I have re-checked the Airport card to make sure that the aerial is connected properly.

Any help would be very gratefully received.

What steps have you taken on the Mac? Just plugged it in and looked for bars?
Airport is turned on? Control-Click the menu bar signal indicator to make sure.
You've run the Airport Setup assistant?
You've opened Internet Connect to search for the signal and a network to join?
With Airport turned on, you should be able to see any available network that is close by...
I can see my neighbors down the street...they are not running WEP, just password protected...so I can see it and try to join...

Tried everything I could think of. Been into Network Setup, Airport Setup Assistant, turned Airport on & off, restarted the computer, restarted the router. You name it.

The point about being able to see any network nearby is exactly the point. The fact that I can't get any signal from a router in the next room makes me suspect something is amiss - probably at the router end. I'm just looking for ideas as to what it might be.

What do you mean no bars in the airport?!

What else am I supposed to do when I'm waiting for my flight?

I'd do a hard reset of the router, go into the browser based config and make sure that everything looks good there...

Does the Netgear have wireless enabled?

Yes - the icon on the front of the router indicates that it is enabled.

My Netgear allows filtering based on MAC address. If the MAC address of the computer's airport card is not registered with my Netgear, I won't get any bars in the airport status icon. Make sure all security features are off. Once you have that working, you can start to turn them on again.

Which is why a hard reset should be done to get it back to factory fresh...
Just start from square one, that way...no unknown variables are involved.

Thanks. This sounds like the sort of thing I am after. Unfortunately it also comfortably exceeds the limits of my expertise. If I understand it correctly, I need to go into the configuration for the router and make sure that there are no security features on. Is there anything in particular I should look for? WEP is disabled.

Your best option is to follow Lex, and do a hard reset

Most Netgear boxes have a button on the back...you hold it in for ten seconds and it wipes the setting out and restores the factory stuff....then open the browser and point to 192.168.0.1 and enter the admin ID and 1234 as the password I think...
You documentation will say for sure....or DL it from Netgear...if you dont have it...

Thanks for all your help. People like me probably shouldn't be allowed near computers. Re-checked the Airport antenna connection & found that it wasn't connected properly. Presto...5 bars.

Still can't get the Mac to connect to the internet via the modem (get a modem error message in Internet Connect) ... but hopefully will be able to sort that one out.

Thanks again for takimng the time to help.

Modem error?
Turn your modem off in the Network Sys Prefs...and, if you have not done so already, drag it to the bottom of the list. Drag Airport to the top...the network tries to connect in that order, so if Airport is at the top, that will be primary.
Then reopen Internet Connect.
