[help] half ringer, What is it?

I saw a post with picture on how to remove the "half ringer" from the connection box on the house. See link below. I believe that this was posted by someone in the mid-west.
What is a half ringer, and what does removing it do? Is it some thing that I (located in Connecticut using a regular SBC DSL connection) would benefit from?

I had to remove the half-ringer from my NID because every time the phone rang or when I picked my phone I would loose the dsl connection. The DSL connection would come back in a minute or so but it was very frustrating.
The half-ringer in my NID did not look like the one in the link you have posted, mine looked like a black computer chip with two red and two green wires. But it was located in exactly the same place as in the link in your message.
I believe the half-ringer also called MTU is used by the telephone company to test the phone line remotely.
Removing the little sucker instantly solved my problem, I would have never known about half-ringers, but MrFixitCT solved this problem for me. The waterproof telephone wire connectors are available at radio shack, they make the job a snap.

Thanks Uncle Joe

Rit, you will notice absolutely no effect if you remove it and it's removal can solve certain DSL problems as Joe described. It's of no value to the homeowner and the test described above is correct, just to add, the original purpose was to enable telco's test to isolate whether the problem was inside or outside, a value I personally feel it fell short of...

Isn't a half-ringer normally called a "leaner"?

I've had that happen a couple of times to me. Tried to find answer on google for a thread and google returned the thread I was trying to find help for.
