| AIRISEN in Lehigh Valley
airisen Anyone? Well I live just 30 feet outside of the DSL territory. I heard about this company called airisen. The guy came out to my hosue and did some tests and I can get a decent speed for the same price as my current sat connection. Well I haven't seen anything very recent about this guy. After reading his past reports I a little leary about hooking up with them. Any recent feedback from come customers? Hopefully some in the lehigh valley?
Thanks, charlie |

| Hi, Charlie! I wish I could add anything helpful especially since I'm so close to you (I'm in Emmaus) but, unfortunately, there aren't many WISPs in the LV to go with. If you're a bit nervous about airisen you might want to check out »www.cawinet.com, although they've recently taken a bit of flak about their "WiMAX" system. »WiMax in Rural PA.
Might it be possible to set up a simple point-to-point wireless connection from someone that can get DSL? Just an idea.

Interesting to note that you DSL/CABLE forgotten. How many households are facing the same problem?
How far are you from Philadelphia?

| Howdy, Fuzzyb. I can answer that as I live in the Lehigh Valley too. Charlie's a couple of hours northeast of Philly in an area that's severely broadband deprived. Verizon doesn't think there's enough household income to justify upgrading their COs and, while there are a few cable companies in the area, Comcast is sparse as is RCN and the small local provider, Service Electric offers mostly one-way cable with just a couple of areas offering two-way.
The LV is growing in leaps and bounds with many commuters working in NYC and Philly. Unfortunately, technology is still pretty dated although the $200k and $300k+ developments are popping up all over the place. There are probably easily 30k-50k+ households facing the same problem in the area.
Hope this answers your question!

| reply to charliepa74 I have to say, I also read many of the concerned citizen reports about airisen...but I gave them a try...Well, I have to say the service is very good. I live 7 miles from the transmitter in Holland Twp, NJ..I have a line of sight from my hilltop in Northampton County. The connections are fine, no issues with bandwidth. I have experienced some minor outages, when their server gets hit by lightning, but these are things that all services have. I have to say that compared to the non-existent DSL from Verizon or Service Neglectic in the area they are great. Also, the initial cost was minimal and certainly far less than Starband or DirectWay...
Also, they do answer the phone...no electronic mazes to navigate to get to a human voice. This is the best thing. Unfortunately, as I am writing this they are repairing a server. The last time this happened was about 6 months ago. Not too bad considering the other services that are not available in my area. No DSL, No ISDN, No Cable...only wireless....

| reply to korym Hey Kory,
Are those Households in a dense area or are they located throughout the Valley. I am pretty sure that Comcast and Verizon will provide connectivity to those folks. What is your sense of the coverage area in terms of square miles?

| reply to korym Both. And, Verizon and Comcast aren't taking the Valley seriously. It's been addressed in the local newspaper. Verizon won't even put DSL in their Emmaus CO. And Comcast only serves a limited area with Service Electric serving the majority. And they typically only offer one-way cable which is pretty much a joke (Service Electric).
I'd say it's probably very roughly over 700 square miles.

Yeah, probably so. The airisen signs that they've hung up on telephone poles around Nazareth are fading quickly. -- WISP & Wi-Fi Hotspot Industry News |

| reply to charliepa74 anyone else using them? In my communication with them, things seem a little odd.
They want direct withdrawal from my checking account. I told them that I am not willing to do that. They said that if I wish to pay my bill by check, I would have to give them 2 months fee as a security deposit.
I have a pretty clear LOS to the tower, so service would probably be good.. but the amount that they want up front is making warning lights flash. |

I have (I sh!t you not) probably about $10k in WISP gear sitting in storage at my dad's farm in Fogelsville. thrakkerzog, feel free to IM me your approximate location so I can see where you sit in reference to their tower. Is it on South Mountain or is it on the other side of the Valley? Do you have LOS to Bear Creek in Macungie?
What kind of speeds would you like to see? What's a fairly monthly price? Should I crack open the business plan again?
I'm thinking about doing something with enough interest. I need to pay for the T circuits somehow and I, too, am broadband-deprived.
What do you all think?

| Kory,
I don't think you have to dust off the business plan just yet. I contacted CAWinet, asking if their setup costs were as high as they initially were. It turns out that I am close enough to get their 900Mhz service. It is 256Kbps down and up. Sure, it's slower than cable.. but it is 10x faster than I normally connect.
He quoted me $55 a month, no setup cost. I'm not sure if this is strictly based on my proximity to the tower?
It is $40 for 256K/256K service, plus $15 for equipment rental. I have to imagine that it would be $80 for 512K/512K service. We'll see how happy I am with 256. |

| Sounds good, thrakkerzog. Thx much for the info! I've heard good things about CAWinet aside from them mentioning they're offering WiMAX (they're not). 900Mhz will work well with penetrating trees and the service is good up to a few Mb's.
Let us know how it works out!

| I thought that it was just the morning call article which said WiMAX? They don't mention it at all on their site, at least.
With 900Mhz, what kind of trouble will I have with cordless phones and a baby monitor?
I have an old lucent phone, about 7-8 years old. It doesn't say what frequency it operates on, but I am assuming 900Mhz. I have to turn the baby monitor off if I get too close while using the phone. I have a dirt-cheap 900Mhz phone which I have not noticed anything with, although it is rarely used.
I am exactly 1 mile from the tower by road, less as the crow flies. Only a single row of trees would be between, most of which are about the same height as the house. |

| Yeah, there was miscommunication between the MCall and them. It's been cleared up. Others had to clear it up, though, and not them. I think they might have been quiet about it because WiMAX is so "hip." Just my opinion, of course.
You should be okay with 900Mhz with cordless phones and a baby monitor. I would suggest mounting the antenna as far away from these units as possible. But, chances are, the CPE will "roam" for clear frequencies not being used by other units.
If they put the antenna above the other houses, i.e. on your rooftop, you should be golden.

| airisen is a SCAM run by the same guy who tried to start up the failed Newltel company in 1999-2000 throughout Hunterdon County. Newltel used the same taglines, came to your house, installed the wireless broadband receiver equipment (which was soon discontinued by Lucent), "wired" you for the service, took your money, and never provided any actual internet access.
Newltel hooked up MY house with Cat5e cable, which two years later I found out had been crimped wrong by a tech that came to the house to help me get an ethernet jack in every room. So even if there was a service, it never would have worked anyway!
Newtel is currently the subject of a class action lawsuit and is being investigated by the NJ/Hunterdon County Prosecuter's Office, the Dept. of Consumer Affairs, and the BBB. airisen IS ALSO MENTIONED in the suit and everyone who is participating in the depositions against Newltel have been warned about them.
This is another rip off started up by the SAME GUY. Go to the BBB and look up airisen's record for yourself and you'll find the truth about this.

| reply to tgebauer Airisen / AirMaxx ripped me off! Took $510.00
airisen / AirMaxx ripped me off. I'm a WISP operator on the Indiana/Illinois border near Chicago (Illiana Internet -- www.illiana.net) and I purchased two tiltek antenna from this guy. After the check cleared I was supposed to receive a UPS tracking number. Instead after the check cleared I wasn't able to contact anyone at their offices. I've tried calling every 15 minutes for the last six days and I get nothing! I'd urge everyone to stay away from this company as you too will get burned if you deal with them. Their second 800 number is a pay per use chat line too. If anyone out there has had a similar experience please call me to discuss. My contact number is 708-932-9547. |
