I always get two fragments in the NTFS MFT (Master File Table) as well, even after a boot-time defrag. Is there any way to defragment the MFT or isn't it necessary?
What are the MFT files anyway? -- In a state of constant confusion :| ?? ?? ?? |

"MFT is the place where information about every file and directory on an NTFS volume is stored. The MFT is in essence a relational database table, containing various attributes about different files. It acts as the "starting point" and central management feature of an NTFS volume--sort of a "table of contents" for the volume, if you will. It is somewhat analog to the file allocation table in a FAT partition, but is much more than just a list of used and available clusters." -- "I would shake your hand but I'm out of wipes..." - Adrian Monk |

| reply to illJazz I bought DK 7.0 when XP was first released and used the MFT defrag a few times with no problems. Then, after the last update for the 7.0 series, I tried to defrag the MFT and BAM! OS was completely hosed. Only a Norton Ghost image saved my bacon!
I've upgraded to DK 8, but I still refuse to try the boot-time defrag. I'm just way to chicken. Besides, I read somewhere that the MFT being in 2 or 3 pieces is no big deal anyway. |
