1 edit | Extendia AVK - Questions and Answers
Well I bought the security suite yesterday for $29.95, and thought I would start this thread to answer any questions some people might have on it ... Anyhow if you have any questions about the product etc let me know. It seems to be pretty good, it found a couple of adware "trojans" buried in my system that NAV missed; nothing too nasty. A few false positives on IRC scripts I run (system info and a few others), but over all the double detection engine seems to be well put together.
Ask away and I will answer if possible! -- Hail to the Nipple-Titan. |

Those are not real trojans, AVs use a "trojan" nomenclature for spyware. We get this over at TrojanHunter forum all the time -- have to tell folks that TH only detects real trojans and trojan-like code, not adware or spyware. NAV has some of those in its database now, as expanded threats, but only detected by NAV 2004 {earlier versions will not detect expanded threats even when in the signatures}. So I would pretty much discount such detection as an added bonus but really something that Ad-Aware or SpyBot S&D are better designed to detect and remove .. | reply to FishPants Please continue to let us know how you feel as you continue to gain experience with this program.
I "try" to help several people within my circle of influence (in-laws, cousins, etc) Mostly these are completely computer illiterate folks. I am having an extremely difficult time even convincing them to just get a router even though they have only one computer. Several are hooked directly to the internet with only what microsoft gave them. I have cleaned and cleaned with ad-aware and S&D and can not even get them to run it once a week and get updates. I have been searching for something for them to put on the system that goes on "autopilot".
After reading the thread yesterday I am considering telling them to just buy this program or I will be unable to continue to support.
Do you feel that it is "newbie friendly" after it is installed.
I hope this post is considered to be "on topic" since it looks like a large amount were flushed yesterday. -- "Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. | reply to FishPants AVK is KAV + RAV, so it's based on two very good engines. It's a very reliable AV, from what it seems. Never tried it. Sure wished they'd give a free trial. They even offered it to me for 5.95, free shipping, + another product, too. Still, no trial = no go. -- WASTING TIME spelled backwards is... |

Well I think *you* could make it newbie friendly for them, but I wouldn't let my mom install it on her own "out of the box".
The application reminds me a lot of KAV, lots of functionality available but certain areas need improvement. I have found that while scanning for viruses (manually), when it finds one it puts it in a listbox.. If you click on it, you get another window that offers you "Disinfect" "Delete" "Virus Information" etc, now let me provide more details on where the problems are:
1. When you click virus information (keeping in mind the scan is running in the background), the windows totally freeze up and get the (Not Responding) in the title bar. You can hear the drive accessing like crazy, and the search is still happening however for whatever reason when you click "Virus Information" it does this.. About 1.2 hours later the virus information window popped up the GDI went back to updating as it was scanning. Work around is to wait until the scan is done before checking virus information.
2. The virus information pages suck. There's rarely any information beyond the AVK definitions version where the virus pattern was added. A few major viruses have further details, but it's nowhere near comprehensive. They should at least create a link or something to SARC or one of the other big online databases of viruses.
Aside from those two points, so far the process has been great.. Updates automatically (daily) and scans. I had to turn off the compressed file scan since it started at 1am scanning my drives and was still running at 9am. Problem with the scheduled scan is it creates a tray icon saying it's scanning (where you can adjust priority level too which is nice) but it gives you absolutely no indication on how far into the scan it is... I ended up cancelling it since I needed the PC for work and I couldn't work around the processor lag.
So with a few cosmetic updates this program could be even better, from a detection point of view it so far seems to be picking up a lot, including a virus calls Win32/Briss.dr which I can't find much information on (assuming it's also adware).
EDIT: Spelling.

I suspect it is adware:

Not much on it, as you say, just some forum references at Computer Cops and Wilders. -- "But now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love." (1 Cor. 13:13) |

Win32/Briss.dr is definitely a RAV Engine detection {from the RAV signatures}, I did find this thread:
Cyber Tech Help Support Forums - Netsky Virus?
Not sure from that thread whether it should be classified as spyware, trojan, or adware. OH Well, the important thing is it is definitely something you can do without ... heh. -- "But now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love." (1 Cor. 13:13) |

DO you use Spybot S&D or Adaware? They never found them?

JDong, you're a hard sell!
Reason is that I've gone through all the AV's on the market, and even still jump from product to product! there is NO WAY I'm paying to try 30 products -- and most AV companies understand that. but nooooooo not avk.... -- WASTING TIME spelled backwards is... |

I use spybot religiously.. It never found this briss.dr virus/adaware/big unknown. As for the other detections, it was mostly in the spybot recovery directory.
Previous version of AV was Nav 2003.
What was cool is it scanned PST files that were archived on my PC.. I had backed up a friends computer to my system here and forgot about it after I had him reinstalled. It found a bunch of email viruses he had in the PST file; granted I am sure NAV would have caught them once I opened the PST file and tried to access that message; but impressive nonetheless. The only downside is when the scan is THAT thorough it's going to take a long time to go through the 500gb of info I have. Once I turned off scanning within compressed archives; it was very very very fast. -- Hail to the Nipple-Titan. |

| Last I checked, AVK took up about 8,000k of Ram, if I remember right. Probably the tiniest AV in terms of ram usage.
Find the best thing to do is to have it scan all files on-access, then randomly exclude anything that will cause issues or slow down my machine. This built up a nice list of things to avoid, while still scanning potential problem files.
Side note: eXtendia products are sometimes available at CompUSA, MicroCenter and other times i've seen them in Walmarts and Office Max. My local MicroCenter store sells eXtendia AVK right on the shelf next to Norton.

| reply to FishPants Does AVK have any annoyances that you have noticed. I know NAV likes to scan floppy drives at boot up, which is really annoying to me since mine is always empty.(only use it to flash my bios, and run disk utilities). Anything you have noticed yet? Maybe adding to bootup time, etc.

1 edit | I noticed at the Boomerange site it gives the option (1) AVK with only Kav engine for $9 (2) AVK with both Kav / Rav for $29 Have I got this correct that the AVK with Kav engine is $9 . If so what version of Kav is this . Is it the Kav Lite ? Kav lite has 3 settings High / medium/normal/ for scanning ,»www.cyberscrub.com/antivirus/screenshots.php ( reboxed new version by cyberscrub) or is it the Kav personal that is normally $49 »www.kaspersky.com/personal Thanks |
