Each segment room has a hub for more than one connection on that room if needed, each room has one Network jack on the wall, the home office is the central location so each room cable ends up on a 6-port jack on the wall at the office; I connect the 4 port router to the 8-port hub and from the hub to the 6-port jack on the wall:
Bedrooms
Basement/2nd office/entertainment
Home Office

Basically it's not as complicated as it seems... I will switch the hubs for switches soon.

Here is mine. I'm working on upgrading my router to something that can support it properly. May have to add some more NICs or something to the router.

Clouds are large, relatively undefined objects, which is why they're often used to depict big networks like the Internet.

Here's mine, and my mates house that are linked via wireless. We share cable internet from his place, because I cant get any form broadband at my house (well excluding satellite, which sucks).

Here's my lovely layout. I just got that smart ups with the network management a couple weeks ago on ebay. ti powers the IPcop, xp server, linux server, and the EZ800-s (and still only about 18% cappacity ). The 5 port switch is in my room as well as all the stuff hooked up to it. Audrey2 is in the kitchen and my parents use it for recipes and a phonelist and such. Originally I ran a line to the great room for my parent's laptop, well now they got wireless so they don't need that anymore, but it's still around just in case.

(edit)Forgot to mention that entertainment center computer is still a work in progress (/edit)
