msn & aol compatability

hi,
im setting up a new laptop and such for one of our sales reps and my boss has asked me to install AOL messenger so that the sales guy can use it. personally i would rather stay clear of AOL due to a bad word of mouth reputation. is there any other message service ie MSN that i could sign him upto that is compatible with AOL?
