| reply to davidcb13 LEO (Low Earth orbit) is considerably closer to the ether then geosync. Like, 4-5X less. So, less latency.
However, the problem with LEO sat's is, they can not stay at the same speed the earth is ("stay still", to those of us on earth), so they are moving targets.
This makes it more complicated, as well as requiring more satellites (because they are moving, need more to have constant coverage). I forget what the number was, but it was like ~150 satellites for coverage of the whole earth. (VS ~8 for geosync for the same coverage). Thus, a lot more cost. |
