Re: [wired] BEFSX41 Firmware 1.51.00 - POST YOUR R

The bug called "Access to long URL string crashes the router" is still present in firmware 1.51.00. It was first being reported with 1.50.18 but likely present in 1.50.9 and 1.50.7 as well. You can read additional details at the links below:

»Re: [wired] BEFSX41 firmware 1.50.18 - POST YOUR RESULTS HERE
»Re: [wired] BEFSX41 firmware 1.50.18 - POST YOUR RESULTS HERE
»Re: [wired] BEFSX41 firmware 1.50.18 - POST YOUR RESULTS HERE

AliM and I provided the following test link. If you click on any of those link using firmware 1.50.7 to 1.51.00, your router will crash. If you are on DSL or have lowered down your MTU, it might take up to three or four attempts for the crash to exhibit itself. So don't think you're home free if it does not crash the first time .

Re: [wired] BEFSX41 Firmware 1.51.00 - POST YOUR R

Flogator: All:

I just upgraded to the 1.51 firmware. At this time I have no reboots using a Traceroute. Funny thing though is I cannot duplicate the long URL crash. I clicked on each of the links you posted 6 times each for a total of 18 attempts. Logged out and tried again and never got a router reboot.

I do not use any of of the filtering so not sure about those options. My son is a big online gamer, console as well as PC, but he's not up yet. I will have to check gaming play later. Slow page loading is still an issue but it is only the side graphics and doesn't affect page content.

I noticed some of the default items have changed now. Stealthing port 113 is now "on" by default. Not sure but I think block WAN request was "off" by default before but it is "on" now. Also reboots seem to take a little bit longer than before.

My firmware load was as follows:

1. Load Factory defaults
2. Long reset
3. Update via web interface
4. Load Factory defaults
5. Long reset( I may have items 4 and 5 backwards)
6. Started changing settings!

One thing I have set now is all UPnP options are "on" for gameplay.

Oh and if it matters I'm using WinXP/IE6 sp1 and all patches.

UPDATE: After about an hour I went back and tried the long URL's again and on first attempt I got a router reset. After router finished rebooting I tried again and now the long URL's seem to work ok.

What is a "long reset" and how do you perform one?

Re: [wired] BEFSX41 Firmware 1.51.00 - POST YOUR R

Nerdtalker:

Long reset is performed by holding reset button in for 30 seconds. I have found in practice that at around 15 to 20 seconds the router seems to reset so don't know the reason for holding a full 30 seconds but that is what Linksys suggests.

also no go... it caused my router to die. I had to flash back to 1.45.7

It did it to me the first time then after the reset it let me go to the other two long urls. Maybe I can live with this one. I will be mad though if someone in my house goes to a long url while I am playing a playstation game, so maybe I will go back to .47 since I don't really use anything on the newer firmware...

Re: [wired] BEFSX41 Firmware 1.51.00 - POST YOUR R

kirk1233, the likelihood of your family accessing a long URL string is very small. I browse all sort of sites and only manage to find the ones in the UK. It might still be safer to go back to 1.45.7 but if you are willing to stay with us a little longer, perhaps will we be able to increase (or decrease) our confidence in this firmware. Just my 2 cents .

Re: [wired] BEFSX41 Firmware 1.51.00 - POST YOUR R

I probably will. Just looking to keep my madden 2004 0 percent disconnect rating

I am thinking of getting a verizon dsl connection to go with my cable connection an an rv082 to share the two, since my cable connection goes out for 20-30 min after every lightning storm. I here that router has suspect firmware as well, and that is one of the reasons I am holding off...

Re: [wired] BEFSX41 Firmware 1.51.00 - POST YOUR R

kirk1233, I ear you. I was looking at the RV082 as well. However, I can't afford its price for my application. Beside, it is already frustrating as it is getting a working firmware, I will certainly not be paying Linksys to get even more frustration. I ear that the RV082 firmware is very buggy.

Just look at how long it took Linksys to produce BEFSX41 firmware 1.45.7 (more than two years). You may anticipate a similar product maturity time line for the RV082. So perhaps I'll start looking at that unit again in a year and a half from now. How knows, may be its price will be affordable by then as well .

For now, I am concentrating my frustration effort in making the BEFSX41 do what it is supposed to do .

Re: [wired] BEFSX41 Firmware 1.51.00 - POST YOUR R

I was lucky, I purchased my BEFX41 when firmware .47 was already out, so the problems are new to me...

Then again I got it to begin with because my befsr41 ver 2 was crashing every few hours. I concinved firmware could have fixed this since others are having similar issues with that unit.

I tried a 430 dollar hotbrick but I could not even get my playstation game to route through it. They even had an engineer look at my config remotly...

Maybe I will look at Zyxel if they don't get a fool proof firmware out soon. I have heard that their equipment is very reliable. I used an integrated adsl modem/router by them when I had covad and it never crashed. I had 60 day+ uptimes with it...

Just updated, seems faster then 1.50.9, none of the glithes of 1.50.18 seem present, will report back tomorrow after further testing

Using 1.50.18 I accessed in sequence each of the posted long URLs 3 times each with no router reboots.

I second this. My router didn't reboot using 1.50.18, and it doesn't do it with 1.51. I am not using the "Firewall Protection" feature, if that makes any difference.

I seemed to have solved the long url issue by turning off logging...

Re: [wired] BEFSX41 Firmware 1.51.00 - POST YOUR R

kirk1233, your observation about disabling logging makes total sense to me. My theory about this issue is when the router is constructing the log entry, if the URL string is too long, it would trample over other portion of memory. If you disable logging, the router will not attempt to construct the log entry thus will not crash. I have already shared my theory with Linksys and provided lots of information about it. We'll see what Linksys will do with that information I provided them .

Thanks for your observation. It looks like my theory makes sense. Mind you, I cannot live without logging so Linksys got to fix this problem.

Re: [wired] BEFSX41 Firmware 1.51.00 - POST YOUR R

Hi, I decided to sick with 1.50.18, and since I heard that the router reboots/crashes with some URLs do not occurr at the first attempt, I decided to test them hard. I repeatedly check the previous long URL posted by Flogator, and the 3 ones just posted, by using several methods: the plain old single click, "open in new window", shift refresh, cleared cache, all several times (dozens).

I am NOT able to get one single router crash or reset. All URLs always open quickly and flawlessly. My config is completely posted in the other thread about 1.50.18, if anyone needs to check it.

Re: [wired] BEFSX41 Firmware 1.51.00 - POST YOUR R

Hi sir Flogator!

By any chance can you request linksys to add some features for the new firmware? I'm thinking of a router reset that is controlable in the web accesss, this is totally different from the Restore Factory Defaults.

This very useful when your router is far from you. IMHO.

Thanks!

Re: [wired] BEFSX41 Firmware 1.51.00 - POST YOUR R

PARC, the feature you are looking for already sort of exist! If you hit on the "Apply Settings" button from the "Setup/Basic Setup" tab, even without changing anything, the router will soft reboot itself. Actually, most of the "Apply Settings" buttons throughout the whole GUI cause a soft reboot. Only a few will not exhibit this behavior. I'd say the challenge is not how to soft reboot the router but rather how to keep it up without it reboots itself .

Nonetheless, try the above suggestion to soft reboot the router and see if it's doing what you want. Let me know what's missing and if it makes sense, I'll report it to Linksys presto pronto .

Re: [wired] BEFSX41 Firmware 1.51.00 - POST YOUR R

hananz, I don't think your problem is related to MTU unless you are using any kind of VPN software. Perhaps related to DNS. Since you are using static IP assignment on your LAN side, you must manage yourself the default gateway and DNS server yourself. The default gateway must be the LAN IP address of your BEFSX41. However, the DNS server must the the one supplied to you by your ISP. Using any other DNS server on your PCs could very lead to long delay during host name resolution.

If you have already setup the PC's DNS server to your ISP's DNS server, then I guess we should keep looking. However, if you have assigned any different values, would you mind trying the above and report your findings. In general, you can get the DNS server information provided by your ISP on their web site. However, you can also look at the BEFSX41 "Status" tab in the router's configuration web page and whatever DNS server was acquired by the router could be manually applied on each of your PC. Don't forget to reboot your PC once you change their DNS server.

Yep, the long URL thingy is present in 1.51.00 . As for older firmware version, you can always look at this URL .
