Problems With New ZAP 5.0

I hate to be the first guy to complain, but here goes. I just upgraded to from ZAP 4.5 to the new 5.0. I uninstalled 4.5 first and installed 5.0. Now my e-mail, Outlook Express, doesn't work. When I click on send/receive, I get an error message, "failed to connect to e-mail server". No problems before installing ZAP 5.0. Already uninstalled and re-installed it. Doesn't help. When it's uninstalled, e-mail works.

fwiw, did you happen to see what the zonealarm site says about installing?

from the internal program updater feature...

**************
"Note: To install this update, save ZoneAlarm Pro to your PC. Once the download has completed, you may select "Open" or "Run" from the download dialog box. Or after downloading, simply double click the ZoneAlarm Pro file icon on your PC to begin the installation wizard."
***************

doesn't even say to shut down true vector!

i am sorry for your troubles. i know you will receive lots of advice. one idea, if you are so inclined, may be to reinstall 4.5, then go over top with 5.0 per the above instructions.

good luck

That is exactly what I did about an hour ago and it solved the problem. E-mail is working again.

I didn't read the note from ZA before installing 5.0 over 4.5. I just thought I tried everything else why not give that a try.

Once again I'm a happy customer.:D

Thanks for the help.

No problems here. Did you double check the permissions before doing all that?

Ok, now I am having issues with the new ZAF 5. Twice in the last hour since the install, my pc has froze. I had to manually reastart by pressing the button on the front of my case. When my system boots up again, ZA is on the desktop, and has lost some of the settings. I installed over the top, but did choose clean install during the process, and turned the true vector off first. I have no errors in event viewer, and my system has never froze since I have owned it. Good thing I made an image before hand. I may image back, and just install without shutting down ZA first.

Just to add to the list: installed over old version without shutting down ZAF and everything is fine.

based on what is being said and on what the ZA instructions state, that looks like a valid course of action.

please report back what you find. thank you

Hi boblandy, I will definately report back after I install again. Funny thing is, I have always shut down the true vector first before installing over the top of the previous version, and have never had the freezing issue. The freezing problem I had, along with some of the most common AV's not being detected by the ZA AV monitoring, might make me wait on installing again. I have a gut feeling there might be another update soon. By the way, I have imaged back, and all is well! I just might wait on the re-install.

Another thing I will add. The last few times I have updated ZA (I always do the upgrade over old) I notice that just prior to the install starting the TrueVector service is stopped automatically. This is one reason I never went back to the uninstall/reinstall method and also quit manually shutting ZA down prior to upgrading. File this in the FWIW bin.

Check out the ZA Forum site; appears to be a fault in the upgrade. A lot of people are having severe problems. I'm going to wait to see what ZA does or doesn't do about it before installing. ZA having been bought out hasn't done any good- figures. -reiko2

I just installed it on one of my PC's that I JUST installed WinXP Pro on 2 weeks ago.

At first I was using the free eTrust that comes on the Microsoft security disk. I already owned ZA+, so I unistalled the eTrust Firewall (which is just ZA Free anyway ) and put ZA+ on. After feeling comfortable with the install (trouble-free for a week), I made a backup and uninstalled eTrust and installed KAV 5 Personal (BTW, I really like KAV 5! It's worked flawlessly for me). This configuration has been working without any problems for a week.

So today, I get an email from Zonelabs about how they're not going to support ZA+ after next year and that I could upgrade to ZAP for FREE! I'm not one to turn down a free offer (even though, I've never really liked the extra features in ZAP) and so I turn off ZA+ after telling it not to start with Windows, restarted the PC, uninstalled ZA+, rebooted again, and installed ZAP 5. Here's why I still hate ZAP:

I made a backup of my settings before unistalling ZA+. When trying to restore those setting after installing ZAP I got an instant (and unwanted) REBOOT!

OK. . . so it reboots and everything seems to work fine, so I start Internet Explorer to test the firewall. Things seem fine until I exit IE and find my system slowing to a crawl. I check the CPU usage and running processes to find that iexplore.exe did not close properly and is eating the CPU at 100%. I tested this by uninstalling/reinstalling ZAP and KAV together and seperately, and I can say with confidence that KAV 5 Personal does not like working with ZAP 5.

Everything works fine now that I have reinstalled eTrust. It doesn't seem to have any problems with ZAP 5. Well, except it keeps saying that eTrust is "Out of Date" and gives me a link to buy AV protection from Zonelabs.

Although I am not having any of the conflicts or system hangs that some people are reporting I have noticed that my log does not show any "outbound" attempts that are blocked. It does not show any "outbound" attempts period. I manually block several things and have several set to auto block, but the log is no longer showing this activity. ZA does seem to be blocking these outbound attempts, but the log is not showing it. Seems they have some major problems with this release.

Looks like I am not alone when it comes to the freezing/hang problem with the new update. I have imaged my system back to my previous version of ZA, and everything is working like it should. I am going to hold off for now with the install of version 5.

I was thinking the same thing when I had the new version installed. When I was getting the program popups from ZA, showing that they wanted internet access, the activety was not being logged. I then realized there are two categories now in the logs section. Program activety, and firewall.....check it out!

Man do I feel stupid. Yep there are the "outbound" attempts. Ahhhhhh, all is good here. Hope things smooth out for you. We do not need another NAV like fiasco on our hands.:D

Yes, the new ZAP 5.0 is quite finicky!

I am having lots of hangs and things of that nature, especially when any of their "privacy" features are activated . I have adjusted the various settings, but sites don't seem to load or display even at the minimal lowest setting.

When I don't have any of the privacy features activated, smooth sailing ensues.

I haven't noticed any problems yet. However, like Keizer See Profile mention ZAP's AV monitoring function doesn't recognize the AVG Free I have running.

But overall, everything is good so far.

That may be due to a corrupt ZA database. Easy to fix.;)
Detailed steps appear on ZA forum.

Re: Problems With New ZAP 5.0

I just un-installed ZA 5.0.

I was getting too many freezes and hangs, even with some privacy features de-activated.

In fact, it wouldn't even allow me to un-install, even when I had disabled vector monitoring. I had to go into Safe Mode to remove.

I will sit out this version of ZAP 5.0 until a patch or update is offered!!
